Hands=shit ton of hand studies, and I mean a shit ton.
Foreshortening= perspective, everyone woks a little differently here. Do a good study on perspective and gesture work using lines and curves. You mostly feel out the perspective on arms like that(imo), you have to learn to trust your eye and what looks natural. Doing some studies on cube forms may help as well.

The pose doesnt really make sense. Here's a quick redline of the same-ish pose but a bit more realistic. Not saying its perfect but its a bit closer to what the pose would actually look like.

You need to do a ton of gesture drawings to get your proportions down, with that chicken scratch its obvious you completely guessed the form one small line at a time. Practice doing quick poses composed of circles for the ribcage, pelvis and head.

Not him, but after playing around with the tool a bit I think I get the gist of it. It's mainly used for blending, but it looks fantastic when used right. You lay down your colors and values as you would naturally, define the form and such, then you just use the water tool to blend them and come away with a very nice looking effect. So technical know how mixed with the right tools. Knowing how to paint and judging the light source are still key, the tool itself just gives it a very natural blend.

Are there any methods of "copying" another artist's style? I know it's good to develop your own, but I want to have a little fun drawing cute girls doing cute things in the midst of art lessons involving body shapes and squishy rectangles.

Pic related, this is what I want my art to look like.

Sorry if this upsets some of you guys, or if it's kinda obvious how to do so already.

I'm reading lots of Loomis/Vilppu already, and I kinda get how to emulate another style, but I just wanted to ask in case some of you have experience doing that already.

Not exactly. The term "3-point perspective" describes perspective that is defining all 3 dimensional axes: x, y, and z.

Adding additional vanishing along the horizon does not make for 3-point perspective; you are simply defining secondary x and y axes.

You can take anything to it's logical extreme, Miku. Look up infinite-point perspective (yes, it exists) if you want to go hardcore-architect-modo.

Granted, I can't say you aren't wrong. Lol It's definitely there. Pic related

However, remember that perspective should serve your drawing, not debilitate it. It shouldn't get in the way of your creativity. The best advice my tutor ever gave me: "make it look right, but don't worry about it being correct."

That's a dangerous mindset to have. It's better to stop and start over than to keep on working on something that is flawed at a fundamental level.

Take the file, throw it in the recycling bin, clear it. Then do it again. You have to learn to not be so attached to your art that you can't realize when to start over.

If you want to pooh-pooh your 'fundamentals' on others go ahead. But that's not what these cancer containment threads are about. It's about drawing 'Animu' and redlining other peoples shit with your own shit, and visa versa. Nobody is required to adhere to someone elses principles. You either take the advice or leave it. If it tasted delicious would you expect a complaint?

In drawing, if the end results are pleasing, why should it matter how you got to it? When you look at drawing you're not exposed to the process, you're only seeing the end result. If all anyone will ever see is your final drawing, then why should it matter how you drew it? If it looks good, who the cares if you used the 'fundamentals'? Only people with some kind of aspergers would become butthurt over a pleasing and correct drawing if they found out the artist didn't utilize 'MUH FUNDAMENTALS'.

The biggest reason why /ic/ is full of shit quality artist, such as yourself and some here, is because the majority are autistically focused on adhering to some particular procedure, and they ignore the based thing when drawing--problem solving. Most d/ic/ks are too infatuated with preaching, rather then with learning about improvisational skills and visual acuity. The biggest joke however, is that nearly everyone who screeches 'fundamentals' can't explain how, why or when they work. All you retards can do is fall back on cliche remarks and troped aphorisms.

You don't suck because your fundamentals are lacking. You suck because you don't think for yourself.

>In drawing, if the end results are pleasing, why should it matter how you got to it?

Its never going go be. Or to say it even better, the person that has his fundamentals
down will always draw technically better than you. The question is what you are satisfied with,

some people get to the point of drawing a believable figure and a sameface and say thats good enough,
but some people want to go further than that. It comes down to what your end goal is.
If you don't learn the basics of drawing properly, you are going to be very limited to what you can create.

All that matters really is the end result - while I still recommend every artist to get their fundamentals down, explore different art styles and broaden their horizons, there are artists out there who are successful even without getting their fundamentals down - this isn't because they think they don't need it, but it's because they've found their market, their niche. And that's really the only way to get successful as an artist in the field, finding your niche. Some markets require art that is so stylized and cartoony that it doesn't even matter if you actually do or don't know your fundamentals - as long as the work you output is up to par with the industry standards, or better.

Should you still learn fundamentals though? Fuck yes, because to me, that's the only way to grow as an artist, maybe even as a person, I dunno.

You don't understand the question. If the picture is technically correct, why should it matter *how* they did it? Or to put it another way if you can't tell the difference between a work derived from a certain process and a work that wasn't, then why should that matter? This isn't rocket science. It shouldn't it matter. If someone didn't implement the procedure you're prescribing and still was able to produce a superior work, you have no grounds to chastise. And anyone who says using a certain procedure will always produce a superior work is a fucking mindless pussy. You're basically saying someone else's work is counterfeit because they didn't do it the way you would have done it. And you're saying despite the final result. If the end result can't be distinguished from a work that followed a procedure, why should that bother you? It's a completely asinine believe to hold, to believe a ritualistic adherence to some drawing ideology will always produce superior work. That's literally puts you on the same trajectory as all the other shit-tier artists that don't develop "da' fundamentals".

>> No.1502128

You also didn't get what i wanted to say. What i said is that there is a limit to what you can create without knowing
the fundamentals.

Will you be able to create acceptable, somewhat technically correct anime figures and simple non complex backgrounds without the fundamentals? yes, with enough time and practices you will.

But thats it, as the above person said, you can get into the niche market and be satisfied but you will be trapped to your "niche"
and you will never go above the average level just by trial and error.

And as i said before, if thats good enough for you then so be it, there are lots of artist that stop there, but you cant be so delusional
to believe that you will be making stunning pieces with complex perspective and composition and flawless figure drawing with trial and error.

And no, you can't be technically correct without knowing the fundamentals, there will be noticeable flaws in the quality of your work
no mater how hard you try, and there is the paradox, if you did not learn any of the fundamentals in the progress, you are not really
trying hard, you are just playing around in your comfort zone.

According to the sticky the fundamentals are: Basic Shapes; Anatomy & construction; Light & Value; Perspective; Colour; Composition. And accordingly prescribes certain methodologies of each via a particular Artist.

It doesn't matter if you can barely draw a stick figure - we've got a book to fix that.
~From the sticky.

Ignoring the self contradictory parts, we'll notice a general declaration of /ic/'s procedure to drawing, utilizing those so called fundamentals: establish a perspective, produce a gestural skeleton, box in the forms, and flesh it out. That's basically it, with each part adhering to a particular Artist's system of rote. It's implied that what is shown is the model for improving. And then it's preached on the board that anyone who doesn't follow suit must have something fundamentally wrong with them for not adhering to the fundamentals.

How, for example was some one like Michelangelo able to produce such a drawing as posted, when he didn't utilize any of the procedures or fundamentals as championed by the sticky? According to any d/ic/k who says a drawing sucks because the person didn't get their fundamentals down, it should then follow that Michelangelo's drawing sucks. He didn't Loomis, he didn't Vilppu, he didn't Hampton, ergo his work sucks

who dose the same style as you but also studied the fundamentals while you spend all your life
trying to reinvent everything.

Also whats with the Michelangelo argument? i am not going to pretend that i am an art history expert
because i am not, but Michelangelo was an art apprentice from his very early life, he didn't reinvent
everything, he just expanded his foundation skills that got from his teachers.

See if you can find demo videos of professional illustrators painting traditionally. The approach would be similar even if you're working digitally. What I'd do after an initial color wash is to block in the shadow masses first, then midtones, then deep shadows and highlights.

I like to do it like this:
>put a new layer under your sketch and lay down the base colors.
<make a new layer on top of that again, set it too multiply, lower the opacity to 40-50 % and pic a dark bluish purple to paint down the basic shades with (simple cell shading)
>make another layer on top of that again, set it to overlay and choose a very light-desaturated yellow and put in some highlights roughly.
>knock together all layers and paint from there!

You can separate background from the figure and such if you prefer, off course. And make additional layers after you've started painting for various effects.

The problem with that way thinking is it ignores the obvious: your fundamentals are actually style. The fundamentals aren't as fundamental as you may think they are. They are methodologies utilized to get a certain look. They already are a theory prescribing a style.

So in essence when you tell someone they need to practice the fundamentals you're really saying they should copy your style. If you can't see the irony in that, then you're no better than the cancerous shit tier animu artists who whine 'that's just my style'.

It's completely contradictory to tell someone they need to learn your prescribed fundamentals before learning any style, when your fundamentals already are a style.

Ask this simple question: What makes the fundamentals so fundamental?

If you're thinking it's because you can apply them anywhere to get a certain quality. You overlooking something crucial. What gives them that common utility in the first place? Wouldn't that be the real fundamental instead? And you're also implying they are a style--they are used to get a certain look.

The Michelangelo example is a problem for d/ic/ks becuase his foundation is counter to what is preached. Firstly, Michelangelo started learning the Arts at 14, nearly twice the age of the average apprentice. And he started learning the same way nearly all apprentices did--went straight into to copying master drawings line for line. According to current d/ic/k theory that should produce erroneously drawings.

The real reason why some artist go onto to higher mastery then most, is because they learned to think and reinvented fundamentals for themselves personally. They stopped following others and started think for themselves. That's the true fundamental.
