I have to say that your rendering has gotten really good. I would say be careful of falling into the trap of covering up your mistakes with fantastic rendering. AKA, spray painting shit gold. Your anatomy and understanding of other fundamentals is pretty much the same now as it was in 2010. So please keep up in those areas too as you also improve your rendering. I think a lot of artists fall into this trap, mainly digital artists I've noticed. I myself have done it.

It's been a while since i made one of these. I hope you guys enjoy the images as well as a bit of a story about my progression. I ended up typing way too much...

Left side: 2010. This year was when i realized i didn't have to adhere to any "rules" with art. So... things got weird. I made a TON of art and a lot of it. very odd subject matter, almost like i didn't care. I was comfortable with using markers only but started experimenting with ink. Also dabbled in some digital work when i got a tablet PC. Sadly I was so stuck on using markers, that using other mediums often turned out sloppy. Two high school painting classes helped me pull out of this habit in late 2010, however, my application was still muddy and whacky.

In 2011,, I neglected to photograph any of my work from this time. It is likely all thrown away. I did make good progress in that time, from what I remember, because I was able to afford better supplies. Was mainly using gouache and ink. This was first time i felt "comfortable" using liquid medium. I was able to shape up quite a bit by doing studies and using refs. I don't have much work saved from early 2012 sadly.

Right side: Late 2012 to 2013. using more mediums. prefer ink&gesso combination. I don't draw or paint very much at all, so I try to make it "worth it" when i do. This makes me sad sometimes, and often anxious, because i can't churn out work like i used to. I am failing to use references so the anatomy I draw is flawed, often incorrect; but, still, improved due to past studies / paying attention to people irl. my rendering and understanding of light has improved somewhat, but i still don't understand proportions as much as i'd like. Because of my anxiety about drawing & subject matter with humans (oh god why don't i draw clothes ever or real situations), i began painting abstract landscapes, which is helping me work on my painting skills in the meantime.

Kinda embarrassed that I used to think this was good... :/

Been working on this for 3 hours now - I have got to fix that face... Or I'll just restart. Used an image of Jessica Nigri for reference and made her boobs slightly larger (and focused more on rendering). Tried my damndest to do the leather jacket without peeking at the reference material much in an attempt to understand it better.

Yes - I realize there are flaws - specifically with the hair, face, and arms. I will likely make a reattempt at the face, as well as line removal. I understand lines are a change in value that we perceive - I just have to learn how to put it into practice which is going to take more hands-on practice than studying, I'm sure. Also going to have to do more study on lips. I like it and I don't at the same time.

I am impressed with my improvement.

Ah, I haven't really been studying all that much. I mostly just look at the tutorials and info graphics posted here. Sometimes I draw figures from my head or a sketch from reference. I've only done about ten hours of figure sketching and two referenced sketches this year. I-I'm not sure if that all counts as studying though. ;_;

Apologies for the craptastic photos.

I see some improvement - in 2010 and 2011, I basically had no concept of figure drawing, perspective, form or really anything, and even when I observed (ex all those headshots were drawn during different bus trips), it was still pretty shit.

Now, I can freehand figures and stylized faces (even though the examples here are pretty crap), I'm fairly solid on simple perspective drawing, and understand what's *wrong* with pieces I do. My line work is way cleaner than ever before.

I'm my own road block to some dramatic improvement - which, I know it's seriously egotistical, but I'm sure I'm capable of - instead of finishing my sketches or doing full portraits/figure drawings/landscapes. I usually just end up flooding the page with doodles, it's an awful habit. I'm too unfocused, even now, and I really should focus less on *finishing* sketchbooks and doodling every little tiny idea that strikes my fancy, and doing real studies in anatomy, perspective and form.

Not only that, but I should draw more full paintings/sketches of things I want to draw - fantasyt drawings, cartoons, superheroes, y'know, fun stuff. I basically side line those to cartoonish little doodles and never finish them as full, post worthy pictures.

I dunno, what do you think, /ic/? Am I right?

I take that back and you DID improve. You have a strange style and I don't know how to encourage you to keep it up. Please incorporate those color schemes from that prism that you sketeched towards the last of that page. You could be your very own George Kamitami. He uses a lot of ice blue to draw emphasis on things.

>> No.1492622

>>1492617
It's samefag again, the strange thing about you is that you go from "The Gorrillas" angular to fairly shapely. Once you get a strong feel for anatomy go back to the Tank Girl/Gorrillas artist and then George Kamitami for the more curved forms. This will give you sick as range as an artist. And since you naturally are doing that anyway it won't feel like work.

Thanks so much, I feel like you really saw right through a lot of my stylistic influences and attempts whic his nice to hear. I'm definitely a Hewlett fan but funnily enough, never really drew on him as a direct influence. I sort of came across his comics after realising his art was similar which was a big encouragement. I've never heard of this kamitami guy but I'm checking him out now, thanks again

your line art is very neato, your paintings suck dick, you could of course keep painting until you get better, but you could spend that same time reaching greater heights with the line, a fork lies in your road.

Yeah, I hit that fork earlier this year and I feel like it's still weighing pretty heavily on me. I felt like the biggest loser since all I could draw were lineart cartoons and after deciding to study visual art full time, It felt very amateur. I decided I wanted to learn how to 'paint', even if just digitally, and I've spent a lot of time since then trying my hand but I fear I'll just never be able to pick it up. Colour in general just boggles my mind and having such a huge field of illustration that I really do appreciate and want to be a part of so much feel so far out of reach for me has really soured my life as an artist lately.

Yes, draw from life, as you can see, your construction of heads is pretty bad, keep drawing real face and you will understand how to stylize them.

dont copy other ppl stylization without understanding why they stylized like that. So, no tutorials.
