I know what you are trying to do but right now, that light source is that square object that looks like a window. In your piece, it is facing us "the audience" AKA backlighting. Which would make sense if your figure was doing rehearsal at a dance studio with the lights off. And you can make that work for you. Believe it or not first image on google search for "backlit" A furry white mammal just like in your picture. Your picture has similar lighting conditions, the figure would be very dark with some light bouncing back onto it. The reflecting light source, we can infer, is coming from the inside of the room that we cannot see. So you could play around with cold temperatures around the atmosphere like soft, dark red from the stage curtains.

It looks like what you want to do is apply a spot light scenario, since your character is on a stage. Everything would be very dark in the background but the original colors you have would remain the same for the most part. Best thing you can do is google/flickr "spotlight/stage/ballet" So you can get an idea of what the lighting would look like.

Even though using dark colors, goes against the delicate child-like nature of your image. Trust in the science of colors and keep it simple. It will work.

use references. study those references. get a picture of an ear at that angle, then render it correctly. pay attention to proportions (like rule of thirds), that chin is extremely long. neck somehow gets thinner as it approaches the body, learn the muscles in this area and give him trapezius. we should also see a little bit of the far side of the neck, beyond the adam's apple. nose is off too, we should be able to see a nostril.

tl;dr use references.

I disagree, I like it.

I think the background could do with some rendering work but in terms of how the background blends with the coat, I think it compositionally works, attention i focused on the face.

Work on the lace thing at the bottom left though, make it darker, as it is there is a random unrewarding little focal point in the bottom corner for no reason, take away some of it's dominance by just making it darker.

Bottom of the nose is a bit too high. Eyes are a little too high, and by extension the cheekbones are misshaped.

You're missing a lot of interesting warm hues in the face - yours looks cold and sterile by comparison.

The reflections in the irises are too bright.

One big issue is that it looks like you have algenpfleger's same-face going on (squinty eyes, long face, upturned nose, mannish jaw, too many crisp edges). If someone told me this was an older study by him, I'd believe it. Pay more attention to the model's features, the actual hues present in the still, and the actual crispness of edges.

Do a few master copies off classical painter portraits. Study their edge and value control.

To see your inconsistencies, try flipping the image constantly...you'll see just how proportional certain things are and aren't, then flip back to normal, keep flipping until the mirror images all look alike.

Your proportions are very off putting. Make sure the drawing is correct before moving on to values. This doesn't mean you need super clean lineart, but solid construction instead.

Draw more from reference then.

Your proportions could use some work. The head looks big compared to the shoulders. The arms are longer than norm (elbow lines up with bottom of ribcage and wrist with pubic bone when the arm is extended). The feet look a little small for his frame.

Biggest issue by far is his head and face - you've got some strange distortions all over. Practice constructing heads from unusual angles with references. Be wary of lens distortion in portrait shots.

That's a bad reference to be drawing from. I also don't think you're ready to be deviating from a reference yet.

You need to learn how to depict basic forms in perspective accurately. Slowly move on to more complex objects (the figure is very complex). Find random objects around your house (apples, vases, etc), place them on your desk, light them up, then draw them.

And also dat hair, how can I make is look natural-like? I'm really at wit's end on that subject and google gives me tutorials that cause me to space out or rage.

Any feedback/ advice appreciated.

man, of all the things you couldve picked from the reference thread, you pick the snail.

You need to refine your color and lines more, it's really messy right now. You can see the color of the bottom layers cuz you didnt cover up everything.

That was my picture actually. I know it's from days ago but like I said I'm lazy. This is actually my first *real* digital painting and I'm still figuring things out. I thought it was supposed to be messy at first, then you refine it later? And I see what you mean about the green showing through, I'll try to cover that all up. Thanks for the critique!

thank you!!!! yes it's gonna get colored, and i want to keep it more childlike, sort of in a pixar universe. i try to stay away from 100% or 0% values consciously from my experience those mess too much with the eye in most compositions. thanks for the input though, one can always still experiment with pushing values and contrast as final touchups.

what worries me is that you too find the composition boring. i don't really know what to do about it other than create a striking contrast between the illuminated area and the obscured area (in color).

thanks anon. appreciate the feedback alot.

composition is weird because it's not symmetrical (which is ok in some case, but not in art like this). The head is only at the bottom of the image for example, while the top of he image (where the black part is) has nothing.
I kind of think the image should be turned a different way too. The right side should be the bottom instead.
study more composition, and draw a better, more meaningful face too. The piece could be pretty cool

Only thing you MUST remember is to make the light even downward. Uhm.. Cause you can see the right hand is dark as fuck, but the rest at the exact same height is really nice and bright. I'd suggest enlarging it to twice the size you accidental saved and then just take the time to go over the thing and sharpen the edges and hard lines and generally just paint a bit over it here and there. You still have a good chunk of work left on it, so it might be worth giving it a go. I think you'd be able to sharpen it up enough to pass with a couple of hours of extra work.

I dunno if this was supposed to be a gift or a commission. But if it's the latter, I would never my self pay for such a small size of the finished result (and even as a gift, I'd be slightly disappointed)

Heh. I knew it was you being an ass in that thread illastrat. Glad I stayed out of it, although this isn't doing a lot for your side of the argument.

Her two eyes are on different planes. Her left eye is pointing upwards while the right inside corner is pointing down. Sloppy linework, especially on the square detailing on the bottom. Careless, scribble shading isn't helping you either, despite you trying to hide it by using thick lines.

You should also work on choosing a light source or do something to give your drawings depth. They're always very flat and lazy looking.

You don't state how so. You just say the lines overlap, they are inconsistent, they overlap. Would you use consistent lines in a painting? NO! so why would i use consistent lines in a drawing. No, not really. Pic related; the colors are a jarring mess. The high-contrast differences, with little/no blending, leave no where for the eyes to rest, and ruin the composition.

Moving on; The eyes are terrible. Your eyes are consistently the thing you are the worst at. This is one of your better faces, but it's lopsided, and the eyes aren't level. And the hair isn't even rendered at all, it looks like plastic, and she looks like she's wearing a garbage bag.

impasto is a technique nothing more, it's not a good or a bad thing but you're impasto technique is poor and not particularly expressive.

>perfect composition
Nope. You've got a lot of purposeless negative space, and the entire thing is static.
>color harmony
Not really. It lacks appropriate values, so even though you've gone with the blue/orange contrast, it's flat.
>narrative
What narrative? It's a portrait of a dog. There is no narrative.
>impasto
>bold
Impasto and bold are neither good/bad qualifiers, they just ARE. Unless you are somehow implying that fine detail work is bad, in which case you're retarded.
>striking realism
Hahahahahaha are you fucking kidding? The eyes are completely flat and dead looking, the nose is a jumbled mess, the neck rather than being fold defined by light/dark values is just a few poorly handled strokes, and dark colors have been used to define edges like a drawing.
>>1489097
>color harmony
Teal and red! Rather than achieve true harmony you're just throwing complimentary colors together and hoping it will work. It doesn't.
>decent anatomy
How do you figure? Her neck looks broken, and her back looks heavily disfigured. Not to mention her eye is way, way too low on her face.

Khajiit character I am designing from the Elder Scrolls (I'm also the guy who posted the Prequel Rule 63 sketch awhile back), so this is technically not a furry. If that still bothers you, don't click the thumbnail.

My current debacle is this: Should I keep the fur tufts on his cheeks or have them the way they are in the bottom left? I like the smooth face but he'd look less Khajiit and more Egyptian cat.

Also, despite my photoshop dark magic, I can't resize the image to 50%. I apologize.
