You sound underage. I don't know if you really are or not, but you just sound like it. If you are underage, then that's really good because that means you can get miles ahead of everyone else.

It's not really school that helped them (although it may have been a booster if they did go to school). It's that they draw from life. They learned how things work. They drew naked people for countless hours. Yadda yadda dribble dribble. Here's how to improve your drawing; Stop drawing what you are comfortable with and cut out the cartoon/stylized crap for a year or two. In that period, do nothing but draw people and animals, preferably from life but it can be from photos too for model convenience issues. After that, then draw what you like to draw. I can almost guarrentee that you'll be better at drawing, no matter what style it is. Of course, you could just ignore all of that and remain stagnate for the rest of your life, but really the choice is yours; Skill and talent, or Mediocrity and mental retardation.

Cyberpunk has nothing to do with the punk style, ya doofus. Right off of wikipedia, it's "high tech, low life", meaning it takes place in a futuristic, dystopian sort of setting. Cities filled to the brim with prostitution and drugs. Blade Runner and Mass Effect are both sci-fi works of fiction. Blade Runner is cyberpunk. As you'll learn very quickly from Vilppu, draw lines of action rather than the contour, or "outline".
I personally find it much more helpful to watch his video demonstrations rather than his books, which I found to be a bit "step one, draw a circle, step two, draw the rest of the fucking owl"

if it's even just the first chapter, watch the video version. gesture is important, so pick the most effective way of learning it

>> No.1483169

Vilppu will tell you that speed will come. Take your time and "feel the pull"

Gesture drawings aren't supposed to always be these 30 second rushed type of things. There's absolutely no problem with spending a minute or two on em. Think about placing your lines and having them represent the movement and the space the object is taking up.

yep, but this is still loads better than before.
i think when you are faced with muscle bound figures you get caught up in contour

pic related is how i think you should try to approach them more.
also, if you want another approach to gesture, check out Proko's new video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=74HR59yFZ7Y

he emphasizes capturing movement a lot and his technique might make it easier to see exactly what sort of lines you should be making

They all look awkward.
Mot of them are just fucked up anatomically, especially the bottom left one.
First learn how to construct the head from basic 3d shapes, then learn how to draw the details and then the lighting.

You can't just draw a bad base and expect that "shading" fixes everything.

Also you should read loomis' books.

ok, don't ever use your style as an excuse.

Where are you getting that lines aren't important? And why would you take any advice here with more than a grain of salt in the first place? Nothing here is law, and there are no laws in art.

But with that being said, there are certain criteria, a logical taxonomy to drawing that should be loosely followed. Drawing lines is an innate skill. It's not something you need to learn how to do; it's at the base of the drawing pyramid. So right off the bat you're hampering yourself by claiming you, "can't learn how to draw lines." You're one step off from the people that make threads about how to grip a pencil.

If you're already getting so caught up on your lines, maybe you need to take your mind off them, by either negative space drawing or painting either digitally, or with physical media like markers, paints, etc.

Khajiit character I am designing from the Elder Scrolls (I'm also the guy who posted the Prequel Rule 63 sketch awhile back), so this is technically not a furry. If that still bothers you, don't click the thumbnail.

My current debacle is this: Should I keep the fur tufts on his cheeks or have them the way they are in the bottom left? I like the smooth face but he'd look less Khajiit and more Egyptian cat.

Check out Peter Han's videos on dynamic sketching.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgDNDOKnArk

Now, you seem to undervalue the importance of geometrical shapes.
Boxes, spheres, cylinders, etc....
These are your building block and I noticed you completely skip construction in favor of, what is essentially, symbols.

I'd ask you to not pay much attention to "shading" or values at the moment. Use shapes to describe the form, shadows and values will come naturally as you develop your drawing.

And check Villpu's videos, specifically "Drawing Manual", he goes into depth about the importance of these shapes.

Draw from life, etc...

Torrent for Vilppu's stuff.

Also, study perspective.
Really, sometimes putting a character in perspective can change everything for the best, foreshortening, values, composition, they all make use of perspective.
And don't dick around, study hard if you really want to become a pro.
I shit you not.
If you spend 8 hours doodling silly stuff or playing video games, don't, instead use those 8 hours to learn the theory, apply it to your life drawings and then study some more.

Stylization comes later, because stylization is a process of abstraction, and abstraction can only be done correctly if you have studied a subject correctly.

Even fucking Picasso studied realism in depth before stylizing his work.
