I used to love anime as a kid but I realized all the characters look the same, as if the illustrators use stencils to draw them. It's disgustingly terrible.

But 1% of it is bearable, the stuff studio ghibli makes is neat.

I don't think there's anything wrong with liking a certain style and adapting off of it. As long as you don't go around thinking it's the all superior style, and you still practice other styles and techniques, I think it's fine.

I wish, man. I wish. The best luck i've actually had is observing the figures that are based off his work, so I'm thinking of his art in a 3D form and can study his folds and anatomy. Of course, they cost a crapton, and most are only available in Garage Kit form, so I wouldn't recommend it.

>>1479528
Here are some basic measurements I got from studying his proportions. They seem to be pretty consistent across all his work.

The only thing I struggle with are his faces (I've been doing studies on him and nil and still haven't figured out the secret for the faces), and to some extent his brush strokes (the hard edges are not difficult, it's knowing how to place them that is). His palette seems to be plain, which is hard to get used to for me since I love heavy vibrance.

If you don't know nil already I recommend observing and studying his work too, since he is practically a perfect copy of redjuice's style. Some other artists I know of that are influenced by redjuice are - saiki, el zheng, s-ilo.

Good luck man, it's not often I get to meet another proper redjuice fan on /ic/

Not sure if you wanted to draw a female body but it looks like a dude.

The female body is smooth has a lot less defined muscles. All your hard edges and angular forms make her either a female body builder or a slim man. If you want a more feminine body you need to add more fat to the buttocks and widen the pelvis

it's a boring and retarded pose in general.
don't let you limited abilities decide what you are going to draw, otherwise you will never improve.

you have to think more practically. "what you see is what you get", so use your eyes for once and tell me what you see with this image.
what is she even doing?
she looks like she's falling but her pose completely looks like she is kneeing on the ground.

so what went wrong?
the answer: you didn't put a single real tought into the presentation of the piece. you just created whatever you thought you were able to draw.
you have to strech yourself more. try to create depth with your poses. try to create livelyness or clarity with your poses.

everything but this kind of "what the fuck is happening? it looks uncomfortable." kind of feeling.

it's neither feminine nor is it appealing in any way.
the head and neck is so simple yet you make the body so distinctive in such a uncanny way.

why do you always make the lower legs so short?

i looks a bit like you know how to draw single things, but have problems placing em at the right spot with the right size.

quick fix: nose a little more right, right eye further left, right tit moved minimal up and to the right, shrinked the legs by about 10% and moved kneecaps to edge of skirt (hip and everything below just looks too big compared to the rest of the body). kept orginal size of pic, so you can switch between pics for better comparision

For eye placements, have you tried the method loomis recommends, with the box?

By the way, the top of the ear lines up with the top or middle of the eye, I forget which. It's late. Go look in the mirror or at another person or your reference or something, you'll figure it out. Bottom of the ear to the nose.

Your folds look fine, but why is she smuggling odd lumpy shapes beneath her skirt? Material bunches up when it has something beneath it or is being held a certain way, but the shapes suggest that there is something on her lap rather than a natural flow of the fabric.

Legs look a bit wooden to me, but the skirt is more distracting imo. I don't like the black outline on her chin/jaw area, and I think if you must outline it should be with a color that looks good next to her skin tone. Did you draw the folds randomly? the folds show whats happening underneath the fabric, where the bolds gather is the point of tension,
this suggests to me that there are knees over there or thighs, i cannot figure, but then the fabric suddenly goes down like there is nothing there

and then there are some flat things that shape do not even resembles legs and you cant figure if its the upper leg or the lower leg. In general
you screwed up big time there, just finish it and move on because you will have to redo half the thing, read about fabric and folds and maybe legs,

yes in anime legs can be simplified and yes they can be symbolical but you must give to your viewers some hints to understand whats going on there,
you must understand some muscles and some shapes, not to make your drawing more realistic but to be able to show what you want easily.

The moment you have to explain whats going on in your drawing with words is the moment that you've lost the game.

I admit I have posted on here before that I was getting burned out but I got over it, and am drawing more of Miku.

Sometimes you just have to let it out somewhere, more specifically to people who have been through that phase and understand what you're going through.

It's not a pretty feeling but I believe if you draw through it you'll learn to love it :3

I think its great honestly You have a great skill at rendering to a completed looking product and your color choice is p cool.
i honestly dont know much about fabrics so this is the best i could do with the dress, i would just recommend copying directly from a google image search of a dress or something.
Also i thought the face could use a lil changing.

but yeah, the lighting and color and atmosphere is tops, keep it up!

Even when i do backgrounds, I get my straight lines with the pen tool first, then trace over every single one with a 3px brush. It's just a tiny difference, but it just makes my background feel a lot closer to my drawn character, and looks less mediocre, if that follows any logic at all.

GREETINGS ANIMU! I AM FROM THE OUTER THREADS, AND I'VE COME WITH GOOD NEWS.

You can know how to draw realistically and adopt the anime style (see Takehiko Inoue). In fact drawing realistically can only empower you in finding you own voice because you are not limited by bad draftsmenship and are able to analyze the design decisions of your favorite anime/mango.

See picture, I can't into anime all that well but my ability to recognize proportion (life drawing) and my basic knowledge of the figure and folds (LIFE DRAWING) enables me to at least ape it.

Just, just keep drawing, be critical, anime is just cartooning.

why are you talking like a goddamn faggot when you don't know what i'm trying to say anyway?

he's talking about a certain habit that happens when you focus too much on unneeded realism when sketching. practicing realism for cartooning will always bring you more and more into semirealistic territories. and if you overdo it you'll tend to forget how to go back to the more expressive ways. it's just about finding a balance to create a good style.

an easy first time guide goes

if the light is warm then the shadow is cool and vice versa. generally the light is cool outdoors, and warm indoors.

the shadow is also complimentary to the light, if the light is yellow the shadow is purple for example. mixed to varying degrees with the local colour that is. if you're worried about the colour of like highlights or shadows and you just want to make sure you get the value right to begin with you can use another layer like overlay to colour the shadows post factum.

and remember to use the full value range.

How to draw any eye at any angle forever.

Note: I'm at work. I had to work stupid fast and I'm not technically proud of this, but I hope this helps you out.

1. Draw two balls. Simple. The simplified form of an eye is a sphere. Draw them in perspective and keep them on an axis of relationship that goes through them. This will help you keep the perspective solid.

>> No.1483641
File: 199 KB, 720x960, image(2).jpg [View same] [iqdb] [saucenao] [google]
1483641

>>1483637

2. Determine the directional axis. There are several ways to achieve this: perspective arrows work well. I use wrapping lines. Draw ellipses as a wrapping line around the eye for both the horizontal and vertical axis. Note: never draw a cross without mentally or physically establishing your directional axis. This will bite you in the ass later on.

3. Determine the orbit plane. The orbital plane is a simplified plane that combines the orbits of the skull (see: the cavities in which the eyes are socketed into) and sit back into the skull. Establishing the plane will help you give your eyes depth and even help you place the epicanthic fold for Caucasoids. Eyes are never placed on a flat surface.

4. Place the epicanthic fold and draw in the anterior chamber shapes for the eyes, which cover the pupil, iris, cornea. The eyes can be tackled in many different ways. The anterior chamber can either be thought of as concave or convex. Either is a viable approach. I make mine convex, since it simplifies lighting. Follow this video for further details regarding the handling of the chamber.

>>1483661

5. Draw lids. The lids should be treated as wrapping lines. Keep your eye lashes directional. Individual hairs should never be drawn individually, and you should always take measures to simplify the eye lash masses as best you can. A general rule of thumb: individual eye lash masses are normally never seen from the front and are far more pronounced with both makeup and a side view perspective.

6. Memorize, minimize, modify. The "draw the rest of the fucking owl" step.

The biggest a-ha! moment for me was when I discovered that most artists memorize their process so they can do it in their head on the fly with using less and less assistance from guidelines, wrapping lines, and essentially most construction. Construction always has its place, but many animation and anime studies use very simple design processes on paper while many of the technical thoughts remain just that: thoughts.

This was an eye I drew yesterday. It looks much more Disney than it does asian, but it gets my point across: the biggest challenge to drawing simply and anime-y is to break down an otherwise incredibly complicated process into smaller parts and commit enough small parts to muscle memory and background processes so that you can draw those kawaii K-ONs you wanna draw so much.

That depends. Is the geometry actually there?

Speaking broadly, if it's a conscientious decision, then there are rarely any wrong answers in art. But in animation, more specifically anime or Disney features that hew closer to a physical reality, sensible and consistent geometry is important. We must also be careful to distinguish a change in geometry with a change in lighting; your hypothetical example, if found in anime, is most likely a change in lighting condition only.

The bottom line is, if you are drawing something that isn't there, then it's pretty much symbolism. And in animation, that can actually be okay. Most TV animation done in flash nowadays cannot be turned, but they still look good enough (but, they also shy away from the dynamic composition one would find in traditional hand-drawn cartoons, and this is a limitation on the kind of stories they could tell.) But the OP specifically asked about anime eyes, and drawing it in perspective. It is important, then, to have an understanding of the head as a physical object. This is also a separate topic from deformation and smears, where going off-model is crucial.

As a figure collector, I find scales help the most, but that's because I have a ton of them in a variety of poses and angles. I do not advocate Figmas. I advocate drawing figures, mannikins, toys, physical objects that you can manipulate you you can see the effects of perspective and lighting on form in real time. Figma just happens to have a deep catalog, so one is more likely to find a specific character, or characters sharing similar designs. It is a reasonably priced option, and second to owning actual maquettes.

Sup guys, I'm really interested in art therapy, or rather, art and what how it affects/is affected by the mind. Basically how people express themselves into their art and such. Was hoping some of you could answer a couple questions.

1)Do you guys use references for your work, or do you just draw from what you know about anatomy?

2)Do any of you use traditional, non-digital mediums? Pencil, chalk pastel, charcoal, acrylic, oil, tempura (just kidding on the last one...)

3)Any of you like to incorporate more subtle detals to characters, like eye depth, nose definition? Subtle hit of muscle or bone structure protruding through the skin?

4)Draw in any other styles, such as realism, abstract, nonobjective, or even 3D art, such as jewelry, glass/metal work, clay or other sculpture forms?

5)Ever create art while under the influence of mind altering substances?

On a a more positive note, have one of my favorite pics of Alice.

1) I mostly use reference. I reference real models from stock images, they have some nice poses. If I don't use reference, I don't usually try to invent a pose, I either draw something I know well or reference my own body.

2) Yes, I use pencil and watercolors. I've tried most of the mediums, but I find pencil and watercolor to be the most appealing to me.

3) I usually define the collar bone, kneecaps and hip bones on my girls, and arm and leg muscles on my guys pretty well.

4) I draw realism too, and most of my art is semi-realism.

5) Nope, never. Never want to either. I dislike weed, because I hate how people act under weed, and it sickens me to know that I act like that too. I think I have drawn something while drunk, but it was shit.

1) I use references, but not as much as I should. I try to draw from what I've learned.
2) Yes. Pen and ink, watercolor. I'd like to try casein.
3) Try to.
4) I vary between iconic and semi-iconic styles. I've done some sculpture, but nothing all that good.
5) Nope.

You render really well, but I think you lose your gesture when drawing your stocky figures. She looks almost frozen in mid air. I'm curious to see where you are going with this.

Also, bampu since we are nowhere near the bump limit yet.
