when people walk, their heads and hips bob up and down. her hair and her skirt and arn't moving at all, it looks super stiff. her hips arn't moving at either, make the bow and apron on her back rotate back and forth with her hips. you need more secondary motion in general. also I'd advice not using a stickman mannequin, use spherical forms instead. also all those details in the ruffles are going to look weird in motion if you don't take their location into consideration each frame. (considering how many you have on that dress, it would be a ton of work, so simplify your drawing if your not up the task.)

Well first of all you are borderline chickenscratching a lineart. If you ever hope to have some line control put your stabilizer to 1 or 2 max.

Stabilizer, while it seems that it helps you, it actually stiffens your lines, making you unable to control the weight and curve. Do line control

exercises and do big confident lines, if you must do a big line, zoom out as far as you need to be able to do it in one stroke and use your arm,

yes the don't use your wrist use your arm thing is not bullshit, the wrist after a certain point it always curves, you cant hope to have line control
over the curves of your lines with your wrist so use your arm.

don't do it in parts, do it as a whole, only brake lines that are multi curved, but even then don't over do the breaking, and refine the edges that

don't connect or that make overlapping corners whit the eraser. And don't let it worry you to death and stop you from improving in other things,
it will come with time, yes with time, as long as you keep it in the back of your head and do line control exercises from time to time.

Variable line weights aren't a necessity.

Better points would be how thing the lines are for such a large drawing, and how unfinished it looks for line art(gaps, gaps everywhere, chicken scratching, messy looking hair) and more like a sketch.

The best I heard is from ctrl paint. Do a ton of quick 30 min paintings. They'll be shitty at first but you learn something from each one. Keep your canvas and reference you're copying zoomed out and paint away. Then actually apply what you learned by painting something. It's a long process but you'll be poppin' out decent thumbnails after a few weeks or so of decent practice

People do that sketch-a-day thing differently, it's whatever benefits them the most

It basically boils down to the fact that anything you draw counts, even if it's just a doodle. As long as you're actually learning something from it though and not just drawing for no reason.

It's more about experimentation and doodling than trying for perfection.

and yes, even chicken scratch can help you as everything and anything you draw adds cumulatively to everything else you draw in the future. Something is better than nothing.

It's not actually useless. Not every one has "talent" and can draw instantly what they see. Some practice and practice until they see some points (be it how the hips curve, arms move, feet, etc.) in what they draw and get used to drawing those things.

If you are practicing by Copying the model in front of you, well you're not entirely doing it wrong, but Analyzing the model or figure or picture you are using as a reference is better. Analyzing will lead you to fully understanding what you are actually drawing, then in turn you can recall those understandings if you are drawing from your mind and maybe twist and turn it.

It's called good observation. You don't need to draw something to analyze its basic shapes and forms. For example, if you have never draw a ship before and try to draw it from imagination you will come up with symbols because when you see a ship in your ever day life you don't go like I shit take a look at this ship and analyze it in basic geometric shapes you just go like yhea a ship I have seen that before. practice your observation.

Okay, /ic/. Be straight up with me. I'm not asking if I suck at drawing, because that's a pretty dumb question to ask. I quite obviously do. I can live with that for now.

My question is how much I suck. How terrible is this drawing? Is it worth my time to pursue drawing any further, or should I just give up now and find a different hobby?

>> No.1472006

Anatomy is your major problem. If we are supposed to be looking at her back, her head won't turn so far like that. Legs, hip, head, hands, etc.

Worth your time? Still depends on you. The torrent at OP is really helpful and read the sticky, it has tons of materials. Watching and reading those materials in one night won't magically make you a magnificent artist. Practice everyday.

If you can't find time for practice because you're busy with work/school/whatever, that's fine. But if you can't find time because you're "lazy" or you don't feel like it then ask yourself if you really would like to pursue drawing. Motivation is the key. If you can't motivate yourself to practice, then you'll be stuck at that level.

>> No.1472017

You don't understand anatomy, form or drapery. But you can get better. Just don't be the person that changes a hobby every year trying to find

because you really enjoy the process.

Proud of this sketch, but I don't want to polish it anymore than I already have because a of several foundation issues.

>erased arm gesture too early
>leg gesture was flawed; too long
>need to study leg anatomy more
>forearm and arm anatomy
>static masses

Otherwise, today marks the end of my first year of drawing and I am satisfied with my progress so far. Any other critique would be greatly appreciated. I've been using a combination of Vilppu/Hampton/Hogarth for studying, with my Loomis FD:FWIW hard copy for extra help.

(I originally posted in the draw thread, but I decided to post here since my original post was posted from my iPod and, therefore, improperly oriented.)

When Teal posts people thank him and move on. They freaked out recently because they thought he'd left. So what you thought was ass kissing was just people happy that he's back.

People have always just thanked him for his help or argued with him. He disappeared right after someone posted the link to his tumblr last time.

The only reason why an artist would not want their work viewed by the public would be if they were either not proud of it, or have something to hide.

Teal is good, not the greatest, but I don't think he should have anything to hide, so why leave when someone posts his tumblr? I mean seriously, it's free publicity, especially when most of the people here love his work anyway.

In the end that's what it comes to, you just have to set your own goals and go about trying to achieve it. See what you like about your favorite artists' work, learn from it. Emulate it if you must, if it'll help you learn better. Don't get caught up in heavy studies and life drawing, some every now and then when on a need-to-know basis.

Drawing should be fun, and if it's not, you should re-evaluate what you're doing that's not fun. Then again, everybody goes through a rough patch, you just gotta work through it.

Mmk, thanks.

I've started doing the body work in Photoshop, once I'm more satisfied with the result I'll post it here for some critique on proportions and gesture, since I kinda did it in a Two-Step process attatching a head to the body.

Also, any ideas for costume? Like I said, I want a Mahou Shoujo look, kinda like Platinum the Trinity, or School Uniform look. But not too generic. The only thing the OR was specific about is that they wanted the character to wear a heaband round their neck.

If you're studying light sources, you might want to start with simpler forms. Take a cup or a ball or a toothbrush or something and put it on your desk and shine a lamp on it and draw that. The light is coming from every direction in your picture.

Keep at it bro.

Eventually you'll get there.

Word of advice though, best way to get better at anime, is to NOT draw anime.

If you focus too much on the style, it ends up looking generic.

Break out for a bit and do life drawings and gestures like from photos and stuff.

Likewise, with the anime style. Best way to improve it, is to do reference shots from ACTUAL manga/anime artists.

Tite Kubo, Eichiro Oda and the like are all great places to start. Especially Kubo, his style has a lot of emotion and is easy to learn. So it's a great way to kinda get a feel for what to look for. Focus on trying to get them as identical as possible, using what you've learned already.

Then go back and use your aqcuired knowledge to draw from imaginations.

One thing though, avoide Kishimoto, dude sucks at drawing properly.

You shouldn't shade with the airbrush because it makes the forms and light sources seem vague. You also shouldn't use thin lines to highlight the hair; like everything, hair should be thought of in forms. You can highlight with a thicker brush.
You did a good job conveying warmth, but not as good conveying setting. I think you wanted them to be on top of a bed, but it looks like the futa is sliding off of it onto the floor, plus the blonde one doesn't have much balance and it's unclear what she's holding onto.
All and all it looks like you didn't really plan anything ahead. I can tell you have the patience to improve, you just need to practice from the right starting point.

How much time do you guys put into practicing//studying? I hardly ever have time and I feel like I will never improve with the few minutes or less that I get. :(

I think her arm might be a bit too high. Your animation is so fucking good though! I'm going to be busting my ass this summer.
I'm going to start animation courses on Monday; I was working on something earlier, if I showed you would you be able to give me some starting pointers?

And I'm an amateur when it comes to creating GIFs so we're even! The framerate is supposed to be 12 fps but oh well
It's sloppy as fuck, and the motion is a bit unclear at the end, but otherwise I wonder if it's at least kinda smooth.

I suck at rendering frills and large areas of fabric, and I bet I screwed up the anatomy somehow.

I like your rendering and colors. How did you learn how to do it? I always struggle with this, never knowing what colors or brushes to pick.

>> No.1479491

>>1479422
I can't really tell you much about colours since I struggle with values a lot myself.

I start off with a dull mid tone, then build and blend basic shadows. I often turn on a black and white filter when I paint to check my values are okay. Only towards the end I put in the highlights, I also set a layer to overlay when it comes to really bright areas. My colors get more and more vibrant as every time I choose a new colour I move towards more saturated points. At the end, I use a soft brush to apply global colours and set to either colour dodge or overlay.

As for brushes, I use a squished hard round most of the time with a slightly scattering smudge tool to blend with. I am still practicing using the hard brush to make clean strokes.

Make sure you determine your gradients in the early stages (after values). By this I mean you want the whole image to have a consistent colour scheme (for example mine was orange to violet) for good vibrance.

All these I taught myself through experience, I am currently trying to learn brush strokes from redjuice. I am by no means skilled but I hope this helped.

This piece is incredibly strong up top, with great shading and a good grasp on facial structure, but I feel like it starts to weaken up at the arms and chest, anatomy wise, and the legs feel completely off. I'd redline, but I'm at work right now. I can do it later, though.
