red is a weird gamut to moove towards blue I'd rather avoid it at the sake of realism

Any suggestions for patterns to add to the robe? I need a way to define the forms more than just the light I'm utilizing now

> blue light on the up facing planes.

That's not how it works. You have to keep in mind the reflectivity of the material. In this case, the skylight only subtly mixes with the base color due to low reflectivity of the cloth, hence the upwards facing planes in the shadow would just be a desaturated, cold red / purple, which OP did add.

i think you are simplifying values too much. they are very relative and interrelated, alot of high values do not convey the feeling of warmth or light.

also think of the surface texture and how it absorbs/reflects light. you wouldn't expect a snake that wanders through sand to have slimey/wet scales. the eye on the other hand, yeah that could maybe use a highlight. other than that i don't see where, i think the values are working very well

You should invest a lot of time looking for values in everything

Sharp transitions are much easier to handle than subtle transitions since subtlety demands much more time spent 'getting it right'

Once you get good at values you can do anything with colors, bad colors are almost always a result of bad values, good values makes it so much harder to go wrong!

http://androidarts.com/art_tut.htm look at the photo study he posted down at the bottom, when he simplifies the values it starts to read very clearly and 'real'

For the record, the composition is fairly weak. The dead space in the upper right corner is very distracting and grabs the eye's attention. This is partly because of contrast (high density vs low density areas) and because the man in the foreground seems to be looking there and our eyes naturally follow his. I would flip him and put him over towards the right of the painting so he's looking at the giant thing, and paint the clouds so they swoop into the action a bit.

Is style the right word to describe your skill? Then I like how you're drawing. The things, that looks strange are gestures. The middle one pose and left one looks awkward. Also, pelvic area of the girl looks wrong. Woman's pelvis is smaller than man's, and the bones are thinner and more delicate. Also, each buttock is (approximately) equal to the size of the head(if we're not talking about fat figure). Practice leg attachment to the pelvis.

We can't criticize that, not because we don't know what's wrong with it but because it absolutely lacks fundamental knowledge.

It relies on symbols to portray something, in other words, there's too many wrong things with it to actually call out every individual flaw and point out how to correct it.

Not that guy, but you need to learn a lot more about art before you can give anyone advice. Lost edges are a very common technique to take away focus on areas that are not focal points and they are achieved by getting the values of background and foreground close to each other.

Ok, a plethera of corrections need to be done on your drawing.
1 - The head's are irregularly shaped. Get some help with structuring a proper portriat.
2 - What seems to me is that your doing this from you head. DONT. Draw actual people from the computer or IRL.
3 - You focus to much on one area of the face instead of the entire head. Like the eyes. Lots of detail there but the chin nose and mouth are porly detailed.
4 - Keep drawing, you have potential. Thats how i started. Find books or videos on youtube on how to correctly structure.

They're poorly chosen shades in some areas but you'll learn in time. If you can get a hold of/find Zhao Ming Wu's painting demos look for a video of those, he has a nice approach on how to determine shadow tones, also James Gurney's books.
I like the concept because a Hindi woman as a fighting game character would be super cool but there are things wrong on a skill based level but it just takes time to figure those kinds of things out and practice. All in all, doesn't look too bad but practice anatomy and I think that this image might be a little too line and rimlight dependent.

>oh boy
The conditions you describe do not happen all the time in real life, as the location of the core shadow depends on the angle of the main light source whereas the rimlight is the result of a light source behind an object hitting a plane that is near parallel to the observer's line of sight.

We see rimlights next to core shadows in paintings often because it is a deliberate choice by the artist to make the form easier to read.

Not saying that anon handled his rimlight correctly, but considering the main and secondary light sources are on the left hand side, I wouldn't expect a core shadow next to the rimlight.

Well... Study how the human head works in different perspectives. A human's face is not only an oval shape with some features painted on to it, as you have drawn it. It has curves, odd bumps and interesting underlying structures. Study yourself in good light in front of a mirror, or a friend, and try to make out the basic shapes that compose the facial structure. have those in mind when you try to draw a face. As the other anons said, values on the face are also affected by the light around it.

Also, the general anatomical construction of the body looks a little wonky - use a reference and keep thinking of the body/face/everything as a 3-dimensional object.

Good luck!

That thing would not walk, it would collapse, possibly even while standing still. You need to use your brain and figure things out before you waste time going into detail on something that doesn't even make sense. When you start an image, the big things have to come first. What is the story, and does it even make sense? What are the elements with which to communicate the story, how will you accurately communicate whatever your intentions might be? How will you compose the image to make it as clear as possible?

Very nice colors and atmosphere, decent rendering. You managed to capture that dense forest feel pretty well. The perspective is rather awkward. It seems like the camera is 10 meters above the ground, and the foliage in the foreground should probably be way bigger (notice how the leaves and stuff are about the same size as the leaves in the middle ground).

The dude is rendered very shittily. Also way too small. Compared to the rest of the picture he just doesn't fit.

Also the composition is not very good. A giant tree taking up most of the space in the middle isn't very interesting to look at. But I guess that wasn't really your goal with this pic so I wouldn't worry about it.

> But have I gone extreme with the lighting and contrast /ic/
That's actually what makes pictures dynamic and cool to look at. One of the most common mistakes with landscapes is being afraid to push the contrast. You did a pretty good job with this. Overall I'd say your technical skill is decent but you need to pay more attention to perspective.
