I don't use them myself, but I do know that Western "how to draw" anime books are awful. I physically hurts me to say it but you'd be better off with deviantart.

And you don't get so many "how to draw anime" books in Japan, because it's less specialist for them.

Just study the human figure, then work on stylising afterwards it you want to draw anime.

Assuming I have reached a decent level of anatomy, fundamentals, etc. and I'm still working on getting better at drawing things like everybody else - how does one begin to develop a style?
I know this is like asking "how does one be original" but could anybody share stories about how they "discovered" their style?

There's a couple of ways you could go about it. You could just ape the parts of various styles you like into your own hodpodge, or you could intentionally design a style to serve a specific kind of content.

This one has gotten a lot of attention but i started it last nigh so i may as well post.

Try plotting out the drawing using boxes and other basic shapes and forms. Planning your drawing always helps. Also, work on your legs and hips, the upper body isn't horrible but damn, that lower body's bad.

I think the first guy who redlined you had it right though, try to be more dynamic in your poses. A cute girl singing is going to be dancing too. Like I said planning helps, you can twist and turn those boxes to get some pretty cool poses. Look up George Bridgman,he does a lot with boxes.

Here's a red line I did.

Your first, and foremost problem is the anatomy. The proportions are off, evident in how short the legs are. The limbs are also oddly long and lanky, a person would only have limbs that skinny if they were starving and haven't ate in a week. If that was what you were going for, you'd have to draw a bunch of bones showing through the skin.

Second, the pose is incredibly stiff. Consider the fact that she's a singer/idol, unless they are boring, or are a puppet/mannequin on stage, they would be dancing or at least buzzing with energy. The pose should be more dynamic, hair, cloth should be swaying and moving. The way you drew the pose, it looks like one of those paper dolls where the joints are held together via pins. Also, what's with the one dainty foot?

Third, and probably least important, is the clothing. What is she wearing? It looks kind of like rags, and I don't think singers wear rags on stage.

I hate to parrot this, but it's really the only solution. You gotta Loomis, a lot. Drawing from life and learning anatomy will improve your animu drawings directly.

I wonder what are you expecting? For people to study anatomy for 10 years before they make they post their first picture? Have you draw anything in your life? Because those images show different knowledge of anatomy and i doubt this knowledge came from ass so clearly some people learn it in some way. Tell me how are you expecting anyone to draw good without drawing bad first?

And people leave because of shitposting.

Probably not here anymore, but I thought I'd point out that the reason all those tutorials are with women is because their bodies are less complicated and have less angles and muscles than most you would find of men. It's better, then, to practice drawing women primarily, and then when you have the hang of it you can shift to male proportions with the help of simple photo references. I've heard it's extremely difficult in comparison to draw males and then try to draw women.

Can't do shapes at all - been trying for a while. I find it easier to just make a ton of messy lines, do a lot of erasing, etc. etc. It seems to - almost - work for me. It certainly works a lot better than the vast majority of Deviant Art users and some of the people on Hentai-Foundry; however, it becomes hard for me to change the perspective or properly forshorten while also making it a total dick to do hands and feet.

I'm practicing shapes on this one a bit - specifically her hands and feet. I will admit that, likely, my main problem is refusing to go outside the shape when actually forming the drawing (for instance, when I use an oval for the torso, I tend to actually make the torso an oval instead of blocking it up some).

There are some major issues with this - I'm well aware, but could someone possibly explain the shape process with a picture at least relatively similar to this? Loomis doesn't help - Vilppu is exceptionally expensive and the torrent is several gigs.

I know I need to practice shapes more and rotating them in my mind, but I can build shape people (series of blocks, spheres, cylinders, etc), I just can't form them together properly - shoulders always look detached from torso, somehow the legs look disconnected or retarded from the pelvis (which I've tried both a block and a semi-sphere, a combination of the two and a pentagonal prism... I'd like to learn this so forshortening and perspective become easier.

Download vilppu, you need anatomical knowledge. Yes you can and will forever be advancing by trial and error, but first you need a basic understanding of what you are drawing. Stop trying to reinvent everything vilppu will show you anatomical land marks of the body that will change how you think about the body when you give shape to it.

Watch the drawing manual first to learn about gesture and then the proportions video on anatomy and then slowly all the other parts. You don't need to create a medical understanding of all muscles to star drawing of course but you need a basic idea of what is what, it will give you a huge jump.

Watch out for the anatomy of the hands/fingers and the legs though. I know it's suppose to be exaggerated by some of it doesn't follow correctly enough to be exaggerated. Are you doing loose lines and then taking a few hours to carefully do the linework? Do it cellshaded. If you wanted a realistic approach you should of started in a more painterly style.

Right now it's reading as a stiff cardboard like raincoat. The lighting is also confusing as hell.

Best thing you could do is study the type of fabric you're trying to perceive.
Folds are usually soft and the value changes cant be quite extreme. Try to think about how much it's folding over one piece of cloth and change the values accordingly.

Now I didnt do it mainly for learning purposes but you can have that smeary ass look and apply a sharper brush on top. alot of animu artists do this. Another thing you can do is blot shit in ona top layer and erase it out with a soft brush giving a nice transition.

Also the lines detract from the image. Look into line weight if you want lines in your image. Personally I just find them pointless.

Your imagine in question is like 80% Just locked there. Darkest value was a mid tone.

Having strong contrast really makes an image stronk.

I mildy changed the values in your imagine to maybe make you notice what I was talking about.

Draw in grayscale for a good long time. Trust me it really helps and coloring is 100% easier.

You are taking it too literally. The image is supposed to be lighthearted.

But there are important takeaways from it. The artist is showing that she is thinking of the entire head when drawing, not just the contour that is visible. And the bean shape is easy to rotate mentally, and easier to remember.

The awareness of form in totality is crucial even when drawing stylized cartoons, and using a simplified form such as a bean or an egg and building up from it is what would allow animators to draw consistently and quickly and without the need to reference constantly. These are fundamental concepts of construction.

Here's a picture I drew during my lunch break at work.
I know it's really basic, just two faces, but there was a point to it.
I was trying to draw the same person once as a male and once as a female and trying to add features that differentiated their gender by using only the face. I usually suffer from ma serious case of same face, so this was kinda practice to get away from that.

I think you'd do well to move the nose over a tad. Don't forget that you can use a crossed box to find the center line of two objects, though note that because the nose falls on a plane slightly above that of eyes, the bridge is still lightly to the left of the center from our POV.

I think the torso is a bit too long. Judging by the length of the legs, if she pulled her knees up to her chest they would only go partially up her ribs. If you try making the pose in the mirror you might notice where the proportions are lacking.
Good job keeping the dimensions in check though! Contour lines are useful.

You've got the head and the breasts resting on the same horizontal even though the head is obviously going to be in front of the breasts. This suggests that the camera is directly on the floor, but then you've got the legs on another plane and the arm as well.

So lower the head or bring everything to the same level.

These threads aren't dedicated to ignoring the fundamentals, it's just that so many of the "artists" who contribute to them use drawing in a manga-esque style as an excuse to forgo learning to draw. I see comments in every thread from idiots who claim that they got into "drawing anime" because they dislike realism. These are the same idiots who, for the most part, refuse to acknowledge that they're shit and refuse to step up their games and put some effort in. Ignorant morons like these post shit work because they seriously believe it's good. Good artists contribute less frequently, mainly because there's fewer of them, and perhaps also because they're more critical of their own work or engaged in practice.
