How long did it take you to become decent at drawing, and how much effort did you put into it?

>> No.1445798

Forever, lots of effort.
What the hell do you think, OP?

What is with the shit question threads lately?

anywhere near decent*

>> No.1445813

I have a lil question. When you were drawing, and trying to get better, did it ever feel hopeless? Feeling like you'll take forever to catch up where many artists are at, with the fear of failure, and that all this effort to be for naught, while at the same time, the sight of the job market sapping most hope you have for most artistic related jobs, while the only time you feel happiness is when drawing and/or inebriated? (my choice is animation)

or in short, did you feel hopeless when aiming to get better?

>> No.1445819

~4 years, and a moderate amount of effort.
That's only got me to decent, still not very good.

I pretty much gave up on catching to others and aiming for a job. Just drawing now as a hobby. It is frustrating when you compare yourself to others. Just have to accept it.

>> No.1445832

Define "decent" because I think I got my 1st one after one month of starting out.

I remember someone making some shit about how long it takes to master something. I think it's something like 1,000 or 10,000.

Around with Wrath of the Lich King was being released:

About one I just did recently:
http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2013/125/d/f/starswirl_the_bearded_s_observatory_by_zookz25-d6463xx.jpg

So around 4 to 5 years. Not really drawing every day either. I doodled a bunch in school, but just played WoW when I got home. Only until a couple years ago did I actually start practicing properly instead of drawing shit; started to look up anatomy and perspective and such. Basically stopped being a dumbass.

Even then, I still think I'm pretty shitty. Just need to keep up the proper practice and I'll get there. Not much else to it.

Me too man, I've been drawing everyday since I started taking this seriously 8 months ago and I'm still not anywhere near good. Hell of a lot better than I was at 4 months ago though.

Just make a point to learn something NEW as often as possible. It won't happen every day but the nights when you put all your pens and shit down and go to sleep thinking "Yeah.. I can draw quadriceps now. Fuck yeah." it feels good man. Feels good.

FEELS FUCKING GOOD WHEN YOU LEARN TO DRAW SHIT NIGGA.

FUCK.

I suppose it is true. 10 fold better after 1 semester of a couple drawing classes at a community college. I just wonder if I'll be able to keep my life on path.

Mother of God... Damn same reason while I want to become a cartoonist. Courage the Cowardly Dog, Lion King, Fantasia, and so on and so forth. They all inspired me to draw, write and create. I want to be able to inspire a next generation of kids and give them a part of their childhood.

I still wonder if I'll make it, and fear that I won't, but I gotta keep driving on.

>> No.1447536

Three years seriously, ~1 hr a day (with a few week+ breaks of nothing, and many draw-all-day stints.) This is to the point where I can mostly draw what I want, although I need refs for most anything other than humans. Before this I'd frequently become depressed because everything I drew looked horrible. Now it just looks passable.
