what? Those white stripes just make me think i'm looking through a dirty window, this sky kinda sucks, but you look so happy about it that i suspect you've been looking at it for too long. Without the whale, there's nothing of interest in here, a bland, super flat beach, and i have to guess the sea is in our backs...

It's still overall pleasant to look at, but it looks like you went in there without much thinking first... Next time try some thumbnail versions of what you have in mind before you start drawing it in its final size, chances are the first one you come up with won't be the best...

Good facial detail and good detail on the helmet. You should be careful with the torso because I see two things that might make it look off.

1. Your face is directly from the side, yet you can see the left tit sticking out as well as the front of the stomach.
2. I have a feeling that the torso itself is a little to fare forward. Looks almost like he is puffing out his chest and leaning back. Maybe make the torso curve back to the hips and not just strait up and down.

You dont have a horizon in the picture. If you think of yourself as looking from a boat, it looks like a solid wave moving away from you. Not the line from a horizon. It looks this way because of the size of the skum on the waves.

Paper and pencil, man. Are you even familiar with what construction is? The second you start painting it, you're no longer constructing it.

Watch Vilppu, read Hampton - they'll teach your construction. Even Loomis has sections dedicated to it, but I forget which books.

>>1444369
Secondly, you way you want to learn painting and construction. You can learn both by painting still lifes. It's nowhere near the mess of 'copying values' as it would be for a photograph. Stick with simple forms like eggs, apples, mugs at first. Construct the object in perspective. Once that's done, paint it using the underlying construction as your guide.

Beginner here. After taking a look at some guides and whatnot (and yes, I've looked at some Loomis but no, that's not what I used for this) I sketched this. I'm not really looking for a redline or anything like that but I am looking for an opinion on form. The guy's body seems to be ok to me, I don't see any major problems with deformities or proportion but then again I'm not as sure what to look for. Am I on my way or am I in desperate need of more Loomis? Also please ignore the derp star in the corner and the sheer edginess of my sketch.

What I'd recommend is look at some beginner tutorials on Ctrl+Paint and give them a shot.

>They seemed fine to me earlier but now the legs seem too short.
That tells you how the proportions are. You should take more breaks from your work as you're in the process of drawing. It gives your eyes time to rest so that when you come back to it, you notice things like "legs are too short" before you go on to the next stage.

Or alternatively, you can flip your work by either scanning it and flipping it, or holding it up next to a mirror.

I'll repeat. Don't bother with such complex forms while it's still apparent you don't know the basics. The image you posted is not ready for critique, especially since you seem to concentrate now on the least important things (for this level of skill).
To answer your question - your proportions are not very good. For instance, legs are too short. Everything seems flat and the form doesn't look convincing. The shading is very random.
You can get there, but don't try to build a roof, not having walls, not having foundations. Simple shapes and forms are boring but they will help you get better. Seriously, I've been there.

This is really neat! But I think you've got your contrasts wrong. If you want to focus on those characters in the center, having the most-foreground be light in colour is wrong. You should make these lightest grey ones very dark, like silhouettes, so that the viewer ignores them and focuses instead on the robots in the fore-middle ground. Try it?

that's because you're drawing it.. sketchy. there are different ways around this, but ultimately you just have to change your technique or your lines will look like you've glues together thousands of toothpicks. Draw very lightly a general shape, DON'T be scared of getting the shape wrong. You are more likely to get it wrong if you draw 10,000 agonzing baby strokes than 2-3 passes on top of each other at the whole thing, or a good chunk of the thing. Does that make sense?

Do line exercises. Don't go nuts on it, just until you get the hang of it.
It's basically drawing different kinds of lines at different angles. There's a slow set and a fast set. It's just about controlling your lines.

After that, you've got to apply it. Try to draw an apple with as few straight and curved lines as possible. Every time you lift your pen/pencil/stylus, that counts as a line. So keep it minimal, and don't worry about drawing too long of a line. Remember, you can always erase it if it's too much, but a broken line can only be re-drawn.

I didn't mind the rap music so much. Tarantino likes to pick his music before he makes the movie, some kind of strange distrust in film scorers. Apparently things end up turning out different than you intended sometimes. I get that.

The lady shooting was laughable. The being shot with too much force thing happened near the end at the cake and negotiation in the library part, too. As well as the bag on the head scene in the middle of the raid. I was totally into it and then they're all arguing about how they fucked up their eye holes and can't see shit.

Just a little bit of facial proportion issue. Make sure you're zooming out a lot to check. I even zoomed out and saw some errors in my blueline I was able to correct.

Nose is a bit wide and long, which pushes the mouth down. You sensed the face should be shorter, which is good, but because the mouth was out of place he ended up with no chin. Hairline got a little warped, and the back of the skull got a little clipped. Fucking skulls and hairlines, man. Hate that shit. Ear needs to be moved back a bit.

Eyes are good, they definitely have volume. But the need to be a bit more orb-like. Love the shape of the lips, be careful not to make them too big. I learned the hard way that the secret to plump lips is not size, but shape. You're already onto the shape, work with that and accentuating them with contrasting values.

I'm terribad at anatomy but the deltoid is too small. Make sure to make it apparent that the hand is of the man's LEFT arm. I stared at it for like 1 minute thinking it was on the right arm, asking myself what the fuck was going on. It is a beautiful hand tho, props for that.

I'm no expert but I hope this helps. I'm absolute shit at bluelines but its hard for me to figure out what's wrong unless I go in and mess with it myself. Maybe it will help you.

I've gotten pretty rusty. Honestly I'm a one trick pony, only thing I've ever really studied is anatomy. It's very strange having one set of your skills higher than the others. I regret not branching out more, though during the summer I hope to change that.

First day of summer sketch journal, did some figure sketches, continued on an older painting, and I'm about to paint a quickie from guy on left.

I really want to do more landscapes, I think. But I wanted to ease myself into a daily regime with something I'm used to. I'll be posting in draw threads every few days, hopefully. Once I have a few pieces, I'll make a tumblr or something. Having people to pressure me to actually finish shit would be good.

mma or wrestling is great for figure drawing, if only for the bizarre poses they end up in. It's definitely a challenge to pause randomly, and force yourself to draw whatever you see.

Haha didn't expect to see someone actually post their art when that guy requested it.

The mma drawings can be more focused on construction as right now they look pretty contour-based. I can also see you aren't really thinking of how the scapulas fit in there, which is a shame because there is some interesting stuff going on there with the poses.

As for the portrait at the bottom, his face is in a different perspective than the rest of his skull (face is 3/4 view one way, skull/ear is 3/4 the other way). Basically you wouldn't have nearly that much skull showing on the right side, and the ear would be viewed from for of a front view (should be put into perspective more).

You're very right, on both accounts. I wish i could get higher definition films of the mma fights, because when you pause them they do get a bit blurry, which makes it hard to see musculature under the skin. Most of the musculature I add is just improvisation. But the poses are just soooo exciiiting.

Already fixed the skull, looks way better. gd ears.

Well you need to learn how to get value right first.

You're trying to draw what you think is there. The upper area of the mouth usually is lighter usually so you go light, the part next to that is usually darker so you go dark. That's what you have observed in a lot of pics so you're approaching this study with preconceptions.
Get rid of them when you make a study. Draw what really is there not what you think is there.

Nice! Keep going...

And I was wondering, I'm having a hard time doing poses like this (with a lot of foreshortening and stuff) and it's a hassle to always having to search for reference photos that matches what's in my head... I'm considering buying one of those Art S. Bucks artists models (the female one) and I was wondering if anyone has any experience using these. Are they articulated enough to put in most "classic" poses? Do you find it useful your self when you are stuck on something regarding a pose? I have a male True Type I sometimes use as a male reference, but the legs doesn't move enough at the hip to allow for a lot of poses...

I'd just practice till I could draw the poses from imagination.

The nose is weird and the hips look like they're facing the wrong way, but apart from that I'm really digging your style.
