For what you were going for, she should be shifting her weight from one leg to another. That means leaning forward on that stretched out leg before springing back to that back leg and so on.
As it is, she looks like she's humping that stick. Also, boob physics don't work that way.

well, the reason i dont think its usefull is because the neck consists of countless bones, tendons and muscles.

Also the neck runs from the lower face, all the way down to the collar bones, theres over a 100 things that can be wrong with it.

Saying , dat neck, is no more helpful then error guessing, and shows a very poor nature in criticizing.

and a quick update after shoving her face around.

You folks were definitely right about the eyes; the look a bit better to me already, so thank you for that.

Otherwise, I'm trying to find references for the cheekbones and eyes, which is a bit harder because while it's something I notice inherently on women, I don't outright pay attention to it as much. So I'll delve into that further in time.

It's the lazy way out. If someone puts in effort on a painting, you should put effort into your critique. Even if you don't know how to articulate it, you could say something explaining why something looks off. Not everyone will instantly know what's wrong from looking at something, especially when they've been staring at it for hours.

So maybe you don't know what specifically wrong with it, but notice the neck is too thin or seems to slope funny. So say that. It's better than nothing. The alternative is looking at a real neck versus what you're critiquing and studying up a bit before you critique so you can be helpful.

Wow you chose hte worst viewing angle (straight front) and the worst lighting (completely diffuse/ambient) for showing forms and volumes...why not try to paint the head from another angle and with a more direct light source?

For critiques on what you have...since the light is so diffuse, you wouldn't get strong specular highlights like that spot on his forehead or the highlights in his eyes. The eyes are a bit cross eyed, and the upper lid appears flat and not wrapping around the ball of the eye. You can also try to introduce a bit more colour variation in his skin, certain parts tend to shift towards certain hues/saturations (ie, nose/cheeks SLIGHTLY more reddish from blood in general, jaw/chin more of a desaturated blue/grey/green shift to it). Lastly, the pure black background doesn't really fit with the lighting on his head, if the lighting is diffuse like that the surrounding areas would also be lit.

Your proportions are all over the place. Face is too large for the head, nose too long, mouth too low. The contours of the head look like a lumpy mess.

Did you construct the head with anatomy in mind, or did you copy the features? If you did the first, you need to take your time and be more meticulous with your measurements. Look for key features of the skull (like the keystone shape in the browline) and get those relationships correct before you lay down any deatils. If you did the second, be sure to look for the large shapes and get them correct before moving down to smaller shapes. There's nothing inherently wrong with copying, but you need to be able to do it accurately before you can do complex construction.

She looks to be off balance because her extended leg doesn't plant underneath her center of mass.

You've got a bad tangent between the plane turbine(?) and her buttox. You could use some atmospheric perspective to push that plane deeper into the background as well, because right now it visually gets lost with the cockpit.

I'm not a fan of those half gloves, but her right wrist needs some work regardless.

I'm also not found of how visually busy the bottom of the canvas is compared to the rest. You have a bunch of gritty details with the plane's cockpit, the second plane, and the cityscape, whereas the rest of the piece is a lot more airy.

I used a mix of both. My knowledge of anatomy is not developed enough to rely on it.

Not sure about the face being too large for the head.. The eyes were too high which made the nose seem longer. The nose was also larger than it should have been because I was basing it's left edge on the placement on the left eye. By moving the left eye (her right eye) to the correct position and then moving the left edge of the nose accordingly, it produces an accurate result. The left corner of the mouth was also based on the left eye and moving it with the new left eye position fixes the problem.

Well, there are a few problems with that. You have a seat, plane, and cityscape occupying the same region in the bottom right corner. They feel crammed, and I honestly think removing the plane would help (it'd also eliminate the tangent problem).

The main issue is that you have a lot of visual noise in the bottom quarter of the canvas. Once the eye is lead there by the figure, it gets lost there, bouncing around in details that are too close to the edge to be important. These details are relatively high contrast and fine in size, which makes them compete with the face as your focal point. You ideally want to design the canvas so that the viewer's eyes are lead around the piece and to the focal point, not get lost at the edge of the canvas. Lead the eyes in, and keep them in, not out.

>> No.1442974

>>1442969
His ears aren't 'way' too high. The tops of your ears line up with the corners of your eyes, and if he's holding true to the curve of the face, then they are a touch too high but otherwise in just about the right spot.

And fixing sketches is a great way to understand your mistakes and correct them.

Polish more, man.

A bit of advice for drawing smoke:

1. Think of smoke like hair: a grouping of forms creating a large, irregular form and a texture. Use a single base value for the entirety of your smoke cloud and add or remove value as necessary to create the the shapes within the smoke.

2. Smoke has color. Not all smokes are black. Keep this in mind when working with color.

3. Use outlines and varying outline line weight to give your smoke a sense of direction and flow. Smoke is highly gestural. For some simple tips to give for more dynamic smoke, use thicker lines on curves (where the smoke is changing direction) and thinner lines on thinner connections between your smoke shapes. Also, denser smokes should have thicker outlines.

4. Don't be afraid to use outlines. They exist to help make the forms of your smoke readable and less ambiguous. When in doubt, use an outline

5. Smoke is a fluid. Understand what smoke you are drawing and understand how it's atomic mass will affect how it moves through normal atmospheric conditions. For example, sublimating carbon dioxide does not float in air.

6. Smoke density DOES NOT EQUAL dark smoke. Again, smoke has color.

7. Finally, don't over-complicate smoke by adding unnecessary transparency. If it's thick enough to be seen, it's thick enough to be opaque.

Hope that helps guy. That should help you achieve similar results to the pic that you posted.

Bleh, tried painting over a bit but it didn't work out that well haha...still posting it because I think a few points still stand.

-Hair, can be less monotonous in shape
-Leg that is raised...think of the femur, the attachment to the hip is too low, raise the leg
-Leg again...simplify a bit more and make forms more subtle, take a look at legs by Gil Elvgren
-Clouds can be simplified a bit more (less visual noise), put into perspective a bit better
-cockpit glass should be transparent, not sure why you have all those colours. Take a look at some photos to understand what it looks like in life.
-bg plane removed, as it was super awkward
-contrast/shininess of uniform played up a bit...I don't know the material, but I think some things in the picture need to be painted a different material, at the moment everything is the same matte finish basically.
-bg buildings flattened as they had too much noise/colour
-dark glaze put over bottom part of plane to remove some visual attention

Even if the plane in background is nicely done, it disturbs and doesnt let the female herself pop enough.

A little background on this: This is for a friend who wanted me to draw it. I'd hate to disappoint and would love to have your feed back, i don't usually draw furry but i made the exception. Red lines would be much appreciated, i am really concerned with the right leg and the left arm. Thanks in advance!

Pretty good dude. You should add some shading and grass or something in the backround

Sorry for how sloppy the paintwork is, my computer is being super laggy and it's near impossible to paint (look at the writing lol, can't even do that).

For arms what you need is some Bridgman, he shows the muscle masses there very well as well as a blocky/planar approach, which is something that will improve your work a lot. You can then know what to emphasize and what to downplay (I tried to show a bit with the painting on the right, but again, super laggy computer means it's a bit sloppy)

its impossible to bend your feet like that in this position, look at some photo refs and re-do them, make them look more relaxed

you really need to get a program like paint tool sai or ps. it looks like you are using an oval brush. the eyes are an ugly color. fix her eyebrows and define her nose because it looks like she only has one nostril. dont put her clothes as plain black, put them a little lighter . find a ref and add wrinkles around her lips. also dont outline hair.
