Yes, there is individual variation. But unless your work looks spot on like the model, it will seem to be a mistake to most who haven't seen your ref. As an artist, it is your choice if you wish to downplay the actual length of a model's neck to avoid any confusion for your viewers down the road. Regardless, you want your end result to look better than the ref - however you choose to accomplish that is up to you.

One of my concerns regarding my studies is to be within the anatomical parameters of my subject without drifting into mannerist stylization a la Mikes Adam on the ceiling. Thanks, these are very useful and helpful,
as I'm planning a a tableau vivant painting soon.

Most of these images are too glamorous or obscure as poses, but the more classical full-body poses are great.

They are more grounded in reality and emotion than modern works.
