Anyways, you can take this further, just keep things a bit more consistent, get some reference, and push certain aspects, simplify areas like the shadows, get more colour variation etc. I did a little paintover and took some notes for you/found a bit of ref hopefully this helps!

I'm no expert, but guaranteed, /ic/ will tell you your lines are bad and you should feel bad. You need to work on perspective mate, but as far as getting more detail into a drawing? Either get a finer tipped pencil by sharpening it with a razor, a fine tipped pen, OR get the biggest paper you can and start drawing as big as you want. Detail is much easier to play with when your canvas/pad is 6 feet tall.

For sketching, like gesture work, where you're going to use up a lot of paper, get newsprint. For practice, go with a thickness you like as long as it's not like.. bristol board thickness. That tends to be problematic.

If you're working with pencils and getting a big pad, I'd recommend getting one of those graphite sticks. It's like a big pencil the size of a piece of chalk, very handy for laying down large areas with the side of the pencil end or the whole thing if you need to.
You'll need a white mars eraser if you don't have one. And probably a clicky eraser for detail work later on.

It's pretty much just what linework looks like when you've got a good grasp on forms and observational drawing.
One tip I can give you is to use a grey/midtone canvas when you're working so that you only have to lay in highlights and shadows here and there. It'll help.
So, brush up on your fundamentals and keep the pic in the OP and study it if you want. If you can't draw people as they look for real, you'll want to do some exercises from Betty Edward's book. Ignore the psychobabble.

Though I really think you should aim higher than that, it's not a bad place to set your first goal.

Fuck the morons saying vilppu.
You have a fundamental flaw, you do not undertantd 3d space and your lines are shit, to put it bluntly.

You need to improve your lines, asap, and you need to practice drawing some geometrical shapes.
This will help you a lot, you'll have a better grasp at constructing complex shapes out of smaller, simpler ones and your lines won't look all chicken scratched.

You are falling into a very insidious trap, you seem to be overendering and adding unnecesary detail to compensate for your lack of fundamental undertanding, don't get carries away, take a few steps back and practice until your lines improve and you can draw simple shape in any angles.

Perspective also helps a lot, since the human figures makes heavy use of foreshortening, so yeah, geometrical shapes, line quality and perspective, get on it.

Awesome, this is exactly what I was looking for. I was in a car accident a few years back and ended up having some minor brain damage that never recovered, unfortunately my hands are a bit shaky as a result. My lines are absolutely atrocious, but once I get to a point where I'm okay with them I'll just go over them in illustrator or with the pen tool, something a bit more safe.

I just drew this, starting with an egg shape on top of a circle and went from there, trying to start with nothing but basic shapes.

I was more focused on the chest than anything else, tried to take into account some stuff some of you said earlier. Are the nipples at least in the correct place now? Did I make any improvement, as small as it may be?

I'll definitely look into Villpu as well.

This is my first redline and it pretty late, so I'm sorry if I'm not all too great at explaining. Also take all of this with a grain of salt, as I'm still studying myself.

First thing I saw was that your ribcage looks strange, it looks as if it's completely vertical. The ribcage tilts back at about a 110-20 degree angle to make room for organs and to help absorb shock. The pose he's in might have him tilt back even further. This makes the ribs appear shorter because of foreshortening. Also, as the ribs tilt back/the eye level lowers the collar bones cover the neck because of perspective (at least in this pose). There are muscles that lay over the ribs and hips as well(obliques), drawing them helps add a feeling a depth with the lats behind them. You would also see the underside of the pectorals because of the eye level and how his arm is posed. The elbows of the arms should end with the lowest point of the ribcage and the hands/fingertips should reach down to just under half the length of the femur. The femur should be about the length of the ribcage and the shin should be slightly longer than that. Your thighs are far too short and small in comparison to your calf muscles as well, that's something to watch in the future. You also need to establish focal points and your eye level, it can help with keeping proportions correct and having a proper field of depth/foreshortening (like his arm for example. It would become shorter as it alines with the eye because less of it is visible).

Haha, in the video he even said that if someone watching knows any actual anatomy, remember he is showing the simple approach...he has to say that cause it's a bit fucked up.

The guy has very little understanding of the muscles, nothing more than a very superficial knowledge. Those "wing shapes" are a strange combination of the entire scapular areas and the trapezius (although not all of the trapezius). Hogarth shows it similar but more accurately (which says something about the quality of this guy if Hogarth is accurate lol). And the latissimus dorsi are COMPLETELY misplaced. I didn't watch the whole video, just skipped around a bit, but the understanding of the things seemed off too like the pecs, no thought of insertions.

Whoever want to learn anatomy is best to steer clear of this guy in my opinion.

-The muscles need to be conveyed with more prominence, large torso and thighs make him look porky. :O)
-Left forearm is too thin, and his thighs need more detail to show his muscles off and not look fat.
-His shorts were meant to be baggy, not skin tight, so make his torso 'slightly' thinner and have the shorts perceptively curve around his hips
-That ear neeeeeeeeeeeeeeds some tender love and care.

Last but not least, don't make an attempt to match things piece for piece, but do always make sure to keep everything in proportion and the way it should be.

you have to draw not paint the lines so why don't you try using the line tool instead. If you want to paint the lines then you should erase the excess "wrong" marks. If you have trouble with drawing digitally just get some pencil and paper and practice there.
I am not very good at perspective but from what I see is that they follow random vanishing points
What I think helped me a bit was that I made a simple grid floor and tried to fit objects on that in perspective. First one point then two etc. Then i looked at pics and tried to visualize the grids there. Start simpler it will help you learn faster.

Try to tone down your use of texture brushes. Using such noisy textures everywhere in the foreground, the figure and background makes the image very hard on the eye. Varying edges and textures is key to making figures pop out from the background.

You have a nice palette of realistic colors going on, but you seem to confuse the temperature of the shadows here and there. When a shadow plane faces the ground, or is very close to the ground, like those rocks in the foreground, they catch reflected light from the ground, not the sky. Reflected blue skylight would only really be in the shadow planes that face upwards, nowhere else.

Artificial objects should not have organic lines, try using a ruler or improving your line quality.

Study how cloth and fabric works, the way it folds in your drawing makes no sense and it looks flat, yes, even cloth has weight to it.

The pose is telling me he's ready for something but his face is very inexpressive.

And it looks line you just drew the tubes and cylindrical objects without previous construction.

Go vague main shape then refine, this way you will have to redo less work and will make less mistakes,I get the impression that you are looking at parts of the ref but not it as a whole (see the hip in relation to torso for example).

Colors are ok but your brush strokes look kinda dirty. You can try sketching out the pose till you are roughly sure of it then painting over it because adjusting as you are painting will take way more effort you will bre reluctant to do redo parts that are wrong (at least that's what I do)

Yeah, the problem is you are not constructing the head properly in 3D space.

While the image itself is too wide, the cranium also needs to be thinner and should be just thinner than the cheeks (where the jaw ends). Also the jaw is curving in a very natural way giving it a block chin thing.

Really my only advice would be to just read some loomis (Yes reading educational books isn't exactly exciting, but it's actually not as daunting as you might think) to get a good grasp on the basic form of a head and how to build it at any angle.

I like the paintover.
I can't really see how /ic/ prefers the original, it's noisy, doesn't describe forms very well and there's no contrasts in the edges. When all the edges are as hard as in the original it tends to look weird.

Remember that textures rearly occurs in shadows, as we see tons of in the original. Wher's the paintover kept the textured areas besides the core shadows and in the light. Which goves a much more realistic and more pleasurable view. At leas I think so.

I'm pretty sure the paintover artist was just trying to get the point across instead of spending countless hours actuyally rendering it into a finished piece.

Oh yikes. That's not a very "friendly" subject, even if you draw her fairly accurately it'd still look "off". You might want to get a more conventional-looking reference for portfolio work.

Anyway, you've really compacted her jaw/chin, and lost quite a lot of the nice juicy contours of her lips. You've raised her nose, stretched the philtrum and flattened her head. You also changed the profile of her cheek, turning her from "quirky" to "haggard, witch-like".

It's not the worst effort in the world but you need to sketch out the proportions more faithfully first, especially if the subject has unconventional proportions anyway.

Face is way too large for the head. The effect looks like what happens when you reference a photo where the camera was too close to the face and the incorrect focal length. The eyes are too high, the mouth too low, and the nose too long. The nose is also pointing in a different direction compared to the rest of the skull.

It's easier to draw if you use a more meticulous construction. Decide on the horizon, and how far away the viewer is from the girl. Using that you can draw the box containing the head, and from that you can draw all the features to the right size and orientation.

hi, i'm by no means an expert or even good at anatomy but i tried out a redline for you just to point out some things i noticed immediately :) my biggest piece of advice for you is that you really need to study your anatomy much more closely because it appears you don't know the major muscle groups and are rather just putting the overall shape of the body down on the page. right now it looks like you draw the outline first and then slap something that looks like muscle contours down on top of it. that's not how it works. the muscles make the silhouette, not the other way around. good job stretching out the lats on the right side, but make sure when you stretch one side of the body that the opposing side of the body contracts to account for that stretching.

This is a dangerous rule to try to make, the contrapposto is all about balance yes but it's not a mechanical law by any means. It's a little better in some respects, but a few new problems arose. The far eye is now too close to the nose, and there are some planar and lighting inconsistencies when you look at the contour of the face and the values used respectively. The eyesocket/cheekbone contour doesn't fully match the orientation of the face. The chin is too long and the mouth a bit too low.

Problems like this typically occur when a construction problem is addressed while trying to salvage as much of the original as possible. Elements like the headdress could probably be salvaged down the line, but the skull and individual features of the face need to be redrawn from scratch with the eye level and distance to girl in mind.

How very dark and edgy.
Some blood just came out of my ass because of your edginess.

well for once you're making the collar bone and the neck way too defined for a female.Or for a male for that matter. To apply lighting and shading properly you MUST look at refferences.I can't stress that enough. If you want to have adequate renderring you must study from real life.Look up some Vilppu and begin doing anatomy studies at the parts you seem to have issue with.On another note the eyes are too big for my taste so they can be toned down a notch too.The problem i see is that you've been watching what generic anime artists do and you just do a repeated shape on the neck below and it just flattens the face and it makes it look like a 2D surface alltogether. In short, less anime, more real life.

Having some trouble with the anatomy and perspective here. Started this as a base idea, so the whole thing will be redone from scratch anyway. I would really appreciate a redline.

Not convinced by those light beams. If the sun was that close to the horizon wouldn't it be illuminating everything? I've only seen that spotlight-effect happen when the sun is higher in the sky.

Im not an expert on this "tilt", but from looking at it now, wider seems a little better, but now the neck is way too fat, especially for a girl who looks relatively thin, also, if look up and feel your neck you can feel it thin as it elongates. the shading of the neck should also contour more inwards the further down it gets. thin out that adams apple. adjust your ears, they look more tilted to suit a straight on look right now. Also raise the eye brows, and open those eyes more. try pulling the shading of the cheeks more towards the outside. as it is right now the cheeks look more like shaded abs. Thats all I can say for now.

People here can be real pretentious, but at the same time this board is more oriented towards the people who study body contouring, shading, line crispness. The people who sit down and work hard on art, and not the people who just doodle in class. If you want my opinion on how to get started, stop doodling, buy a tablet, and practice line drawing seriously.

I though the first version fit the color more. More of a navy greyish, where as this has more light grey diminishing depth. It could go for a lot more blending, darker shade in areas like under the fin, and the fin on the other side. the eye could use some internal shading instead of simply adding those highlights. Those edges especially on the bottom are very jagged. Great attempt though.
