this. boxes are your buds. they indicate tilt, rotation, perspective, and shadow. when modeling with cylinders, you lose the box's benefit of easily indicating shadow and direction.

tangential, but it helps to eventually observe that the body naturally has round and square forms as you progress head to toe. compare the round and square parts of the body to a floor mold (that cut wood with a pattern at the base of a wall) and it can open your mind to designing the figure's shape, volume, and the silhouette as well as separating light and shadow planes. you can keep your boxes and just add roundness/anatomy later on. pic related, swore off bridgman completely the first time i saw this until i came back and it all made sense later.
