After you learn to hold your pencil, control it and draw long lines with confidence. Call me a faggot but I found Hampton's explanation of gesture to be more helpful than Vilppu's, especially if you're starting out. He seems.. more systematic.

I don't know about your experience, but from what I've seen and tried so far, beginners almost always struggle with simplifying. If you give them enough time, they'll start drawing short strokes, contours and details.
After you learn to simplify the form, too much/not enough time doesn't play a role in the quality of your drawing.

I honestly don't know what your advice is, the 30 secs is just a recommendation for beginners to learn efficiently.
Besides, there isn't much difference between a classroom and learning on your own. If the teacher knew the students need more time, he'd give them more time.
