there's different types of academia. For example, in Italy public academies are all traditional, in philosophy and teaching. There you learn anatomy, materials and techniques. Most people who go to those are interested in restoration or replica painting (even frescos are making a comeback, they're requested by high class restaurants and hotels). Private schools, which are often focused on post-modern or industry art (animation, comics) are more to build connections with colleagues, agencies, critics, and gallery owners/investors.
