I'm not a master at coloring, but from my experience, the problem with most cel-shading tutorials is that they teach you the method (the how's) but never the why's. It's good to find a resource that will teach you the principles of values and color and light from a scientific approach, asking yourself how light bounces of objects, how subsurface scattering works, what the differences are between soft, hard, and lost edges are, etc. I would learn and study from someone like Marc Brunet or Sam Nielson.

It's hard to give advice when you've only posted a sphere. But it looks alright. Would have been better if it had a casted shadow on the ground, and area of Ambient Occlusion to better emphasis the reflected light, as well as a highlight. What you have here just feels a bit muted and half baked without these things, at least in my opinion.
