basically decide where you want the viewer's eyes to go when they look at your image. where are they supposed to focus? and then guide them there.
this is done primarily through contrast. our natural instinct is to focus on the things that stand out. in a dark room you're drawn to the brightest light, in a bright you focus on the darks etc. shapes have an influence too, as do rhythms and patterns.
in pic related, what was the first thing you saw? how was your eye guided across the image? and also importantly, where didn't you look without consciously forcing yourself?
every image is a comic book essentially, just without the panels.

kind of long winded but he goes through a lot of the standard ideas about compostion in a very literal sense
graphic la is worth reading as well imo. it's one of the better artbooks
