Whats a good book or tutorial on how to paint different materials? I want to learn how to paint shiny chrome and metal or how to make leather look different from soft fabric of the same color.

I don't think it's even that. I think it's rather being self-delusional about ones own skill, not even realizing ones own failures.
Chances are that if someone says that he doesn't need to learn the basic stuff that is necessary to even draw a stylized and simplified cartoon cat that he does not realize his lack of knowledge or skill.

You can make halfway decent images without construction and perspective by tracing and memorizing. Draw a cat from a picture a few times and you can draw it from memory and it may look good.

The question is if you can draw it with different lightning, from difficult angles, animate it, draw it in a fish eye perspective without a photo reference.
