I actually used to do exactly what you're suggesting, back when I drew traditionally. After I got a tablet and started working digital I stopped inking in shadows and AO because I felt like it interfered with the painted shadows. I know they can be pulled off conjunctively but I haven't learnt how to do it properly yet. I still haven't completely broken away from painting without lines either.
