1. Yes, knowing lighting will help make your comic look more dramatic. You need only look at even a single fucking manga (or tv show, or movie, really just any visual media) in your life to know this. Very few manga are purely linework -- most employ the use of screentones. Even of those that don't, most use hatching to achieve tone. Comic work that relies purely on line with no attempt at tone are very very few in number.
2. "Authenticity" should play no role in your decision making here.
