it's a concept you have to learn, a way of positioning forms in a way that evokes an appealing 'curve' in a figure, and having those curves flow through the entire body is just how natural looking poses work in real life.

when things are drawn on paper they generally look more stiff. adding more exaggerated gesture gives things life. in animation, it's well known that rotoscoping ( tracing) always comes out looking way less lively and quite robotic compared to the same counterpart which has been referenced but with the poses exaggerated. same goes with drawing, you'll want to push everything you do that is supposed to feel alive

as for the actual application of these concepts, you practice being able to draw the gestures like papa vilppu, but when actually doing a drawing, after a certain proficiency of those, you get a natural sense of gesture in everything (not just figures have gesture) and you can draw in whatever method appeals to you the most.

it's kind of like when you use guidelines. you only need them in the beginning, then when they're in your head they are just used as a way to detect any mistakes that slip through before or after you make them, through visualisation
