I love all of Duchamp's work outside of his readymades, and The Large Glass is a contender for my favorite artwork ever, but in the interest of variety I'll post Magritte's "The Lovers 1". It's a shockingly beautiful work, made all the more mysterious to me by the fact that most of the rest of Magritte's ouevre tends to be pretty gimmicky.

Magritte's "Lovers 1" is one of my favorite paintings ever. Magritte is actually a perfect case study you can use to teach someone what a "gimmick" is in art, when you compare one of his paintings like "The Human Condition" to a work of genuine depth like this one.
