This post spends more time complaining about Mr's lolita complex than actually examining Takashi Murakami's conceptions of art history. Thomas LaMarre summarized superflat's shortcomings in his 2009 book "The Anime Machine" pretty well; pic related. It is (or was) a movement that first and foremost presented a theory of japanese modernity; the problems with that, while acknowledged in academic circles, are often understated in public discourse. Murakami has been producing additional art theory ever since; even addressing those criticisms to a certain degree as well. It's just too bad that none of his exhibition catalogues, art and art theory books have actually seen a digital release. I'd love to read this, for example:
