What's the point of training for 5 years to draw realistically if you then do portraits on the sidewalk for $5 a piece? You could have spent that time becoming a doctor.

the hell kinda art school did you go to?

>persuasive writing
That kinda sounds like something that can help. But a more general 'how to network' and 'Portfolio making course' would probably be more helpful.

Funny thing, art teachers who say "don't draw anime" often don't teach fundamentals either. All the real drawing skills I learned in high school came from mechanical drafting class.

A lot of people have difficulty assessing skill level separately from style or outside their own field of expertise. Art teachers are not immune from this, and academia in general seems a decade behind real world market and hiring trends.

>After looking at realist paintings/illustrations all the time
>all the time
Nigger, modern art has been practically ubiquitous since the 60's. We haven't seen much realistic/classic art in a VERY long time.
Modern art IS THE STANDARD. "Opening our minds" would be pretty much accepting (and asking for) realistic art at this point.

>10% overlap between arts graduates and working artists
Not that surprising when you read shit like picrelated.

Most art schools these days simply don't teach the skills relevant to the working field.

It's honestly atrocious and I don't get why there isn't a bigger outcry about this.

It's like if medical schools taught faith healing and acupuncture instead of the real knowledge and skills actually necessary for people to become surgeons.

Open it in its own tab. Should help a lot.

I actually tried a lot of different colors, including plain black, and this was arguably the most legible combination. Maybe I shouldn't have featured some of the artist's work behind their quote or made the text bigger, idk tbhqph

The acceptance of "contemporary art" (as you call it, but I know what you mean) and its overall replacement of technical, representational art in the educational scene has basically destroyed the lives of tens of thousands of young people whom otherwise would have been rightly prevented from attending what were once relatively exclusive institutions. You can't charge someone $40,000 a year to teach them the kind of stuff they could have learned in a weekend on wikipedia and expect them to be happy about it when they leave >$100,000 in debt without the professional credentials to work the front counter of a fast food restaurant.

"contemporary art" is trash, and perhaps worse, it's derivative trash that's already been played out by better artists than any of these kids are liable to be. Pollock and Duchamp may not be to my taste, but to their credit at least they were original in their time. These schools are just churning out deranged sycophants.

>In all likelihood, the government cuts to the arts have probably caused this

Cuts? Art colleges are private, for profit institutions and are among the most expensive schools to attend. The western acceptance and lauding of anti-art and dada horseshit is what caused this phenomenon.

This kind of art and the artists who participate in it are essentially welfare queens and scam artists taking advantage of the precedent set by the anti-art movement and "Dada". "Artists" like ms. Harrison ought to be put in work camps so they can repay the debt their subsidized pedantry owes to society.

http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-35232027

>Creative Scotland defended its decision to provide funding.

>In a statement, the arts body said Harrison was "a recognised artist with an MA with Distinction from the Glasgow School of Art".

>The statement went on: "Her idea, articulated in a strong proposal which met all the criteria for open project funding, focused on exploring whether it's possible for an artist to generate an existence for themselves by living, working and contributing to a single community, as opposed to being constantly on the road because of the need to earn money from commissions from different places that incur costly travel and accommodation costs and high carbon footprint usage.

>"Ellie's project is based on the premise that if society wishes to achieve global change, then individuals have to be more active within their communities at a local level. "In restricting herself to staying within the city boundaries she is keen to explore what impact this will have her on her life and on her work as an artist with national and international commitments."The statement concluded: "Our funding will support Ellie's creative practice in Glasgow and we will be interested to see how the project progresses. "As part of our funding conditions we will require an evaluation of the project once it is completed."

He wants to go to a conceptual school so he doesn't have to. I mean, I think it's pretty dumb to spend 10s of thousands of dollars on a baby-sitting service where he'll learn absolutely nothing but art history minutiae that nobody in the real world except white collar criminals gives a rat's fuck about but whatever.

Considering how competitive the field obviously is only way into the business would involve you being among the best skill-wise or through connections. Both your abilities and your networking will be improved greatly if you go to the right school. I don't think art school is necessarily the wrong path even though there are those that have succeeded without it. Shane Glines and Stephen Silver come to mind as uneducated artists with very successful careers and very appealing work. If nothing else though school must be approached the right way. Try and get to the level where you can get a decent scholarship because the right school in all likelihood is going to be incredibly expensive and the career path incredibly risky; keep in mind you needn't go to college right out of highschool too.
