Sorry for the change of style in the paintover, but I wanted to try and point out a few things I noticed and tried to fix.
The painting is lovely, but I think the heads are indeed oddly shaped like other anons have pointed out. On the boy, the cranium is extremely narrow and high up. The jaw is too long, along with the distance of the mouth from the nose. The mouth also seems too wide and extents too fat to the back of the head.
Another thing, that might be due to style but I would advice to be avoided in the future, is that type of nose. It looks a bit unfortunate, as it is too short and pointed upwards, like a piggy's. If you like your characters to have small and delicate noses, I suggest going about it in a different way, like making them sharper and more pointy instead. Especially on males, longer noses that do not point very high look more masculine and attractive.
Lastly, I suggest some practice on eye shape, and how, even when stylized, follows the curves of the eye socket
Sorry if the example isn't very helpful, but I still wanted to give it a shot
Good job on the drawing so far, I am sure the future ones will turn out even better
