I'm ending my work contract soon and I've saved enough to pay for living expenses for at least 2 months. Anyway, during this time I am going to focus on improving my art before getting another job (with less hours so that I can continue to study art). I just wanted to ask any self-taught anons what you find is the best way to structure your studies?

I did Perspective Made Easy and Dynamic Sketching I & II at the beginning of the year on paper but I would like to start moving toward digital art. I was thinking about doing 3-5 topics depending on how the workload feels, at the moment I'm looking at these as options:
- Dynamic Sketching II, to recap on basics, get used to working digital and to continue building a visual library.
- How to Draw, to continue improving on perspective.
- CtrlPaint's Digital Painting, introduction to light, shadow and value through grayscale digital painting.
- Figure Drawing by Steve Huston, introduction to figure drawing focusing on gesture, proportion, form etc.
- Environmental Sketching, not sure which course/book for this one.

I think these topics will cover a good amount of the basics and they fit the length of my break. Anyway, what I'm not sure about is, do you find it is more helpful to do a bit of each topic on each day or if it is better to do a different topic on each day? and would you change any of the topics or the workload?

I am also going to keep track of the progress I make with each course/topic and will post it at the end of the 8 weeks. If people find it interesting, I'll keep going with other topics in the future.

Thanks a lot for doing this! I can see how it'd be easy to move forward from your overpaint into a much better looking final result. I think I'm using the dark shadows as a crutch so I don't "have to" render those areas when I shouldn't be rendering as much as do at to begin with. I like your subtle approach to building the values and hues overall so I'm definitely going to look at this overpainting while I'm doing my Kraven thingy.

Thanks a lot for taking the time to give me feedback.

I think I need to shift my focus from "Quick base -> A lot of refinement" to "Slow buildup -> Quick/no refinement".

I've been looking at a lot of art by this guy/girl called Zeen Chin (pic related). They're working in a completely different style but I still find this shit fascinating. I feel like they're good at everything I'm bad at (and also better at the things I'm okay at). Adding detail/saturation only to the areas of interest where they want the viewer to look and building up their image with soft shadow transitions and ambient occlusion to show their forms. No hard black/white anywhere! No real texture work to speak of or "same brushstrokes on every part of the painting" like you said.

^It's really nice that they provide WIP:s from their stuff btw.

Thanks a lot guys! What a stupid long rant this was... Oh well. Maybe someone has similar problems and is benefiting something from this.

Anyone else always hated those programs that tried to simulate traditional art like artrage/painter? The end result always seemed too "plastic" and "shiny" a lot of the time.

It seems like a lot of great digital artists are able to "simulate" traditional paintings better just from using the simpler stamp and smudge brush engines (PS, Krita) or "watercolor" engines (Sai, CSP, Medibang) in japanese programs. But none of them require the extra processing power to simulate the traditional mediums.

Honestly, who gives a shit about rendering once the artist has achieved a certain level? When it comes to chinese artists, I personally find the rendering of artists like Fengshua, Yang Qi, Yudehong, Zeen Chin etc way more appealing than that of HGJ or new Ruanjia. Mainly because their rendering shows way more confidence in their understanding of how color and light works. They don't need to render every skin pore to make something look good.
