they do look quite stiff for gesture drawings though, try to find more continous motion and note the angle of the hips and shoulders

My dudeman, just learn like a normal fucking person ffs. learn to walk before you run.

First people study drawing boxes and cylinders in 2 point perspective. That's boring shit, but they do it for a reason.
Eventually they can just eyeball and freehand that stuff well enough and that's how the cool guys draw, they can eyeball because they did a lot of practice.

THEN you start studying anatomy with Vilppu (he says you need the boxes covered beforehand, not me). And With Vilppu you're doing highly abstract gestures to get the fluid and dynamic for form for your sketshes no details or anatomy, no proportions, just fluid motions and plasticity. And after that you start putting the details and boxes on top of your fluid and dynamic sketches for a complete picture.

Vilppu is fucking great he's all bout not being stiff and constrained.

Try a longer time like 5 mins.

Your gestures look weightless and out of balance. Always make sure to plant the feet and think about how the weight is distributed. Think about how the legs push up on the pelvis and how the arms push up on the shoulders.

Drawabox is really only good until figure drawing

The Vilppu Drawing Manual and Michael Hampton's Figure Drawing start with gesture and build on that.

Gestures aren't Outlines.
Try to think of it as the start as like a Skeleton, after that you can put in Volumes.

I've been getting a lot better with my art, but my biggest problem is gesture. I've been struggling trying to learn this mystic magic for months, but I just don't feel like I'm progressing anymore, and it's really making me lose motivation, since I can never quite move past my gesture sketch and on to something more substantial.

I desperately want to get creative, but I always feel that my pose is imbalanced or my legs (OH MY GOD FUCK LEGS) are completely out of proportion, mainly being too short.

I also find it difficult to find the forms in space. They always feel floaty and lacking a foundation, like they aren't attached to anything around them. This isn't the case when I avoid gesture.

Another thing I find hard is finding consistency in all the different techniques. I've been told that gesture is solely meant to show action, yet I see the likes of Hampton adding the corners of bones and other things.

My end goal is to be able to draw from imagination, but I seriously need help. Should I being going to life drawing sessions in my area to learn gesture? Having I learned gesture wrong?

Pic obviously not me. Hampton, because he's some fucking wizard.
