I practiced realism for several months because everyone insisted that it will improve my anime faces.
Did it? Nope.
However it taught me many different skills like measuring and drawing symmetrically, etc. which was helpful and I improved my line control too.
I think you can try draw some portraits, learn what it's about and get done with it and move on.

Woops, wrong one. Also these portraits take approximately 1 hour, while normally people spend ten hours per portrait (inefficient imo).
