If you're feeling that lost, start watching some videos or reading some Loomis. It's not the holy grail that everyone makes it out to be, but it does help significantly and also helps you learn where to go next. Participating in discussions here-- not just in drawthreads, either, has really helped me with my ideas of what I should be doing with my paintings.

Don't try to paint individual strands. It's gonna look awful if you give your painting spaghetti hair. It'll also clash with the rest of your painting. Paint hair in sections/clumps/whatever, get the overall feel of volume for the hair without worrying too much about the fine details. see pic
