Starting portrait painting, any tips how to make this look better?

Also should I draw the people how they appear or should I make their faces more average to make them more ‘pretty’?

I just started getting into portraits, can anyone help me improve what’s wrong tho this (pic related)

Also, when painting a portrait, do you try to capture how a person looks in reality or change it to make them more beautiful? (E.g smaller forehead, more muscular, etc)
