If you have this problem, you're approaching the process of "inking" your work incorrectly, or at least not the way you should for the results you want.

What's happening is that building up the sketch allows you to see the lines and weight that you want, you're building up appealing forms because the sketch is loose and there's less stress involved in the process.

If you look at inking as a completely separate process, of course your lines are going to look like shit. You're stressing about making it look perfect and neat and that makes you tend towards uniform/static linework, because there's less margin for error.

Instead of trying to polish your work by inking, clean and shape the sketch.
