It's kinda vague to explain but yeah, that's the line of action and it's pretty much what you need to find first. You start with that line of action and then build the rest on top. Other limbs have their own gesture. The thing you are doing is ineffective and won't help you find the gesture, or at least not in that way. I am not good at all with gesture but pic related is pretty much what you should do to "find" the gesture.
