It's a few short word to say that you self examine and make adjustments according to anything mental that goes into your work. This happens naturally if you practice and improve over time.

From your psychological connection to the subject matter i.e. personal history including your aesthetic/cultural background - to anticipation of your tendencies proficiencies/shortcomings in technical knowledge and execution. To preempt both mistakes and breakthroughs by being mentally proactive for one piece with knowledge of how it relates to everything else you've done.

This is all an important part of making art. Look at the definition:
