i wonder about that too.
I think if you are doing it for the hobby, you should just play around and experiment with the brushes, color-schemes and all that jazz.
in the end how good you are will depend on you understanding of certain topics (light, form, color, contrast etc)
good understanding = good results.
because beyond that, it's really just putting paint where you think it looks good, just like >>1601761
said.
my understanding is still very shallow with most of these topics, but i think the principle should apply to all skill-levels.

in any case, watching videos of other people doing their magic was be pretty helpful for me.
then there's books, tutorials and other articles.
