Not familiar with Massive Black as a whole or their origin, but Even Mehl Amundsen is pretty good. Do you have any examples of their peers outpacing them despite being quite weaker in skill initially?

Anyway, to say that people who are skilled (relatively) early on eventually burn out or regress seems pretty counterintuitive. It happens, but it seems like most of the pros respected on /ic/ honed themselves early on and just never gave up. It seems weird to peg any lassie or other d/ic/k as preemptively getting outpaced.
