cast shadows are hard, form shadows are soft (save the obvious hardangles you'll occasionally run into), don't be afraid to mess around with color gradiations an stuff on flat layers under the shading (they didn't do that there, but it'll add a more natural feel to the skin tones), look up bounce lighting as well. use multiple layers to keep things simple an clean as the way that you're makin me feel tonight an then merge them when happy with the results to avoid buildin up too many layers. also, don't use pure white as your speculars unless you want shit to be shiny as latex. if that's what you're into, fine, but i'd jus use a super faded, possibly more or less saturated (depended on the lightin) shade of the base tone, maybe more towards the color of the light source/surroundins/whatever color would look best with the composition.
