Learn about atmospheric perspective (not that complicated) and how to simplify values. Like in this Franklin Booth piece, the background is made up of like 3 maybe 4 values, you could crank out something similar pretty quick using screen tones etc. This can still work for closer, non-landscape backgrounds if you stylize and simplify. You can also get away with a single contrasting tone or simply not having a background for like 90% of panels. It's important to keep thinking "is this even necessary? Does this help or add anything to the story?" Editing isn't just for writing.

I haven't, but Sergio Toppi's work looks amazing! His hatching reminds me of Franklin Booth's work.
