Drawing period is the best way to get better, and both of the methods you bring up are good for improving in different areas of the craft. However, the first 10 minutes - and in fact the first 30 - 60 minutes as the case may be - are when you are roughing out the drawing. Mistakes here are the point, you are feeling out the subject matter, and learning what goes where. There is not any hard and fast answer, as it depends on your goals for the study period. Dig it?
