The masking effect can also be potentially applied in human bodies as well (to an extent).
Having a simple face allows us to identify with the character, while the realistic (or semi-realistic) body allows us to admire it's sensual beauty and structure.
A face to feel empathy and a body to admire.
Of course, the body has to be at least believable in order to be admired.

This trick can also be used in hentai/porn to allow the viewers to feel the same pleasure the characters are feeling.

Again, anime and manga artists have been exploiting this trick for ages.
