.. The man says "Huh. That's the closest anyone has ever got. You could've just asked." Todd looks up at the man, who is calm and poised. Todd takes the wallet and runs off. Later, he digs through the wallet for cash and finds a photo of a Latino mother and a son. Todd recalls his own dead mother, who was a young war bride brought to the states. She was disowned by her family for dating a black man. She hoped to find acceptance in America, only to be disappointed as the neighbors were hostile, especially as the neighborhood was being bought out by whites. It was too dangerous for the mother to deal with them after the father died, so she took Todd and went to the old mountain cabin that father built. He spent most of his childhood on the mountain where they raised goats, chickens, kept a garden, foraged the woods, and hunted small animals. Mother taught him how to cook, and play guitar. Mother got ill one day, and the doctors refuse to treat her. Young Todd took care of her as she slowly wasted away. Her night time screams still haunt him. Unable to bear giving her a proper burial, he wraps her in blankets and leaves his childhood home. Todd feels the pang of guilt and anger. He pulls out his guitar, which belonged to mother, and starts playing a melody his mother taught him...

I am sad and depressed and heavily intoxicated again.
