O.K here's the thing. I don't know if you looked at the linked post or not but I guess I'll just ask it here. Just the case.

Pic related, top row is supposed represent the different "values" of cadmium red. The ones on the left are made by adding increasing amounts of black to cadmium red. In the video they called it shades.

The bottom row (left) is supposed to be desaturated versions of cadmium red by adding grey. In the video they called it tone.

In both the top and bottom row, the first two "shades" and the first two "tones" look similar right? I'm just wondering if desaturating and lowering the value is the same to an extent(I can sew that one row ends up fully black and the other fully grey by the end).
