I don't think anyone here really understands the purpose of gesture drawing. You aren't drawing gestures to make a portfolio piece or a nice looking drawing, you're drawing it so you can internalize the distribution of weight and the rhythm of your subject by doing so quickly and in a way you feel comfortable with. Don't worry about proportions, don't worry about construction, get a feel for weight and balance instead.

Also, keep in mind that there is no ideal method for capturing gesture, as long as you are getting a feel for flow, balance and to a lesser extent aesthetics and are internalizing then it's the right way to draw gesture. Remember that gesture drawing isn't for your audience, it's for you.
