Of course you didn't need a portfolio. If the students could be turned away for having a weak portfolio or no portfolio, the school wouldn't be able to financially destroy as many beginners who have almost no hope of making it after graduation as they'd otherwise be able to.

If their students had portfolios they might even be good enough to discern whether the faculty are competent enough to warrant paying them tremendous sums of money to teach them.
