What are you even comparing here? You realize that cartoons also have concept artists and background artists, most of which are far more skilled than those working for video games, right? Are you comparing video game concept artists to the animators and characer designers who draw and animate the stylized characters for cartoons? Why? Why not compare them to background and concept artists who work on cartoons?

Are you talking purely about the OP image here or are you flat out retarded?

You can't possibly be dumb enough to believe that everything done in a graphic illustration style is automatically unimaginative and shit, right? It's just an approach that uses flat colors and graphic shape design, everything else is up to the individual artist.

I personally really enjoy this type of art because of the abstraction of the shapes. The artist can be very symbolic and stylized, yet at the same time, pulls a certain degree of realism into it through believable lighting and texturing. There's a huge amount of skill required to find the simple statement in something complex, then make it even more simple as a form of stylization, all the while keeping a sense of believability due to the color, light and textures.

I do however think that in order to fully appreciate the simple statement and interesting stylized shape design, you do need to have a certain degree of skill yourself. Which would explain why you just don't seem to get it.
