If you are a beginner wanting to draw purely from imagination, I'd recommend highly iterative sketching. If you have a tablet, it's very easy to do this. If you are using pencil and paper, then you should draw VERY lightly so that you can erase many many times.

Start with something extremely basic - essentially just a stick figure. Keep erasing it, and redrawing it until it's posture and positioning look just right. Eventually, with enough trial and error, your eye will see a posture that seems more `correct'/balanced, and you will erase the weird looking stuff. If you are very new, only when you have a stick figure that looks like it's making some kind of `gesture' (pointing off into the distance, for instance, is an easy one to start with) should you start drawing your character on-top of it. Once you have the gesture in mind, you will have a guide of where to place what on your character's body.
