I'm not sure if I understand your question. Here's how I usually do
>Let's say I want to draw a cute animu in sailor clothes or medieval fashion
>I come up with a vague image/pose in mind
>do thumbnails and sketch on paper/pc
>"I don't fully know shit about medieval nor sailor clothing"
>go to pinterest or artbooks for inspo and reference
>refine sketch
>do lineart, coloring and render

additonal steps
>be sketching
>can't draw/visualize the pose well
>read anatomy books or google similar poses
>do a quick study of them
>go back to sketching
>repeat process if stuck again
