I think it's something that's picked up as you go. I'm trying to expedite the process by spending time every day browsing the artwork of other professionals and other artists throughout history and collecting screenshots of my favourite moments in movies and TVs shows. Photography is also worth a look I guess.

I've skimmed throught the following texts:
The Eye Of The Painter by Loomis
Composing Pictures by Graham
Where to Put the Cow by Griffin

There are different "styles" of composition for different kinds of illustrations, I think it's worth considering what makes each of them characteristic and what their various cliches and tropes are, so that you don't find yourself applying what you learn from browsing landscape paintings into drawing dickgirl porn.
