I don't think it's the obsession with silhouettes, it's the bad way of using them. Most of the time artists just lack any kind of subtlety.
Look at this page from Dana Gibson. The professor has those spiky hair jutting out, which can be seen from any rotation of his head.
That's good character design.
It's basically Mickey Mouse's ears, just applied to a more realistic character.
