Too many to list. All sorts of artists from the ancient to the contemporary world. Renaissance, Baroque, Expressionist, Abex, I'm inspired by artists from most every school and movement.

I guess I most admire paintings in an expressionist mode right now. Lovis Corinth, Lucian Freud, Max Beckmann, etc.

Also i have found that a big and varied colour palette adds enormously to the realism but also to the painted look of it. What you must do to reinforce the second, is make every tone accentuated, and make it have its counterpart in shadow as well.

Look at the variety of yellows, greens, oranges, blues there are in this painting.

Here's Lovis Corinth, who synthesized elements of Expressionism and Impressionism. His style changed dramatically after a stroke that paralyzed the right side of his body, forcing him to learn how to paint with his left hand.
